Mk2 Corrosion On Roof - How To Fix?

Featured Replies

Hi people,

After looking at some of the corrosion posts in the forums, I think I won't have much luck getting Ford to repair the corrosion on my MK2's roof. At the moment, this is a small corner, but it looks like it is getting worse, and I'd like to either repair or do some damage control. As this is my first car, I'm not quite sure how to go about this though, and am hoping a knowledgable person here can help me.

I've attached two pictures of the spot - one closeup and one further for context. A few questions:

- Given that my car is 9 years old and has done just over 110000 miles, how likely is it that Ford will do the repairs free of charge?

- How much would it cost to get this repaired on my own costs?

- If possible, is there any way for me to do this myself easily (e.g. grinding down the rusty bit and then repainting it)?

I appreciate all advice. Thanks in advance!

Ford definately wont do it for free, but you really need to get it done. As an integral point adjoining the car and the windscreen, if that fades your going to have a fragile windscreen.

To get it repaired at a garage, you could be looking at anything from £100 upwards, depending on each garage, but I would expect to pay £300 or more.

Basically anywhere else on the car, you could just grind it down, rebuild and repaint easily. But being next to the windscreen, they would probably have to remove the windscreen before doing any work, as one wrong move the windscreen will be shot.

Then they have to grind it down and rebuild it, carefully ensuring they keep its original shape so that when the windscreen is reseated, the shape matches and allows the car to go back together again.

Your probably looking at a long and slow job so will be more labour intensive. Best thing to do is phone a few garages and get quotes, but go to Ford and I would expect barely any change from £500

+1 to what jeebowhite has said.

I would always take rust myself but not in that position.

Too risky in my opinion.

Thank-you very much for your answers — not quite what I wanted to hear but I'm glad I checked. I'll have it looked at ASAP.

Sometimes these things are best left to the professionals. You would be very lucky to sort this out yourself but if you balls it up it cost cost you more.

As above im afraid you need a oro for that job as the rust is pushing the seal up the window will need to come out and only then can they determine how bad it is best case its surface rust that can be sanded treated and filled worse case its rotten and needs to be cut out and welded which isnt an easy job as the heat can distort the whole area so again it would be a slow process best case £500 worst near £1000

It may be an mot fail due to its location and the fact the windscreens part of the strucure of the chassis ie it gives it strength it may not not sure how they may look at it
