Bought A Focus, A Few Issues

Featured Replies

After two weeks, we finally got around to completing the purchase of the 2006 MK2 Focus.

have found a few issues which I will be looking at over the next week or so.

1. power steering noise
2. drivers seat moves slightly
3. knocking when full lock.

power steering pump and piping was replaced last month
and I can see its been done once before that too in 2013 ( didn't notice this earlier job in the receipts until last night. )
not over good news to know its been done twice in less than 18 months <_<

when we full lock it ( either direction ) we can hear a high pitched squeal/whirring noise
if you let the steering come just out of full lock the noise will stop.

If there is an issue with the pump I'll be requesting the most recent repairer sort that
as it was done less than a month ago.

also the drivers seat seems to lurch with you when you go to release the handbrake or if you lean back and toward the passenger side simultaneously.

finally for now a single knock when full locked either direction.
I believe this could well be the CV joints so will check these when its on the lift.

unfortunately insurance doesn't come in until next week so its sitting tight on the drive until then.

Check the bolts holding the seats in. Maybe loose.

Could the power steering problem come from the steering rack? Seeing as the work they have already done.

That's definitely the cv joint knocking. I've got that issue at the moment. A little word of advise would be to change the whole driveshaft as the driveshaft is cheaper than the cv joints and comes already made up so no messing around swapping bits over. Also the rubber seal in gearbox would need replacing at the same time.

looks like the ti vct 115bhp version you have if so then the power steering will make a slight noise on full lock ford will tell you thats because youre stationary ive seen quite a few that make a bit of noise which isnt unusual as its hydraulic not like some of the newer ones the seat may just need a bolt tightened

Now you mention it I get a slight noise on full lock aswel. Mine is the 100bhp one. Is that hydraulic?

yes youres is hydraulic as well its like driving a forklift when the hydraulics are under a lot of pressure they make a noise releasing a small amount of pressure

That explains that noise then. Lol.

ive never had a car with hydraulic power steering that doesnt do it if you take it slightly off full lock it will stop as its under less pressuer

The power steering on the 1.6 100bhp models seem to be a problem. Replacing the pump and high pressure pipe after a failure seems to be the cure. You will know when it's failed, under the bonnet will be dripping with red oil lol

Thanks for all the responses!

I think I've read every link on the first 10 pages when searching about PAS on the 1.6 engines.

had it looked at today and its fine at the moment, no leaks and fine when driving ( the knocks have gone too :D )
though I've set aside money for the front drive-shafts to be done in the future should the need arise.

the seat needs swapping so I am currently hunting the breakers for a match
gave ford a call and they wanted £890+vat supply only
the dealer I bought the car from has agreed to pay for the labour and supply a matching seat if he has one about.

I have a couple of mods in mind to get a start with ie: rear camera, st spoiler/rear/side kit
it also needs quite substantial detail work to remove small scratches and swirls.

should keep me busy for a little while :P
