Engine Sounds Lumpy!!!

Featured Replies

Yesterday when I got in the car I sat for a few minutes sorting my music out and noticed that the engine sounds kinda lumpy as if it was struggling at times.

I installed the j1 induction kit a few weeks ago but doubt that would make any odds when stationary? Also I took the soundproofing out then so I can maybe just hear it now?

My car is a 1.6 TDCI mk7

Was the soundproofing the underbonnet insulation? this can cut the engine noise down as well as help to keep the heat in the engine (can be important on a diesel) you may also now be hearing the tappets or the noise of combustion ("diesel knock")

Often diesels run better on the stock airbox - especially if the induction kits draw warm/ hot air from under the bonnet - + trying to make a diesel sound "sporty" results in it sounding like a traktor, unfortunately

is the lumpy noise you refer to accompanied by a little fluctuation in revvs when you first start the car? My mk6 tdci runs a little rough when first on but within about 30s/1min it's usually good as gold!

Yep it sure was, I'm planning on keeping it of till winter.

Yeah, that's a problem it's just drawing warm air, I'm gonna have to make some sort of cold air feed. I agree with that haha!! That's why I'm not touching my exaust but the induction does actually sound really good

Yeah, it sure is!! I've not had time to fully see how it runs after I've moved of, I'll check it out

Yeah I just give mine a quick rev up to about 2-2.5k a couple of times leave it for 10 seconds and move off, nothing wrong with my boost though so it should be minor ;)
