Is It Clock Cluster Fault Or Not???? Mk1 Focus

Hi all i have a mk1 focus tdci the other day it was running fine and then just died and wont restart .the RAC guy suggested a clock cluster fault but not sure. Fromwhat ive read its common but most peoples comments say just dials go bit haywire and is usually intermittent. I dont fancy spending 80quid to have them repaired and then be still at square one. Can the clock cluster fault stop the car running altogether.

Ps never had any erratic instrument behaviour in the 2 1/2 year ive had car..

    It could be a failing cluster. The others are symptoms leading towards it but it can fail at a moments notice
