Whir/whine Which Stops When Clutch Pedal Depressed

Featured Replies

Hi,

Got our second hand Focus a few weeks ago now, but one of my annoying habits is hearing things like rumbles and rattles etc. Today I just noticed a slight noise which stops when I press the clutch pedal down. Noise stops about half way down. Best way to describe it is its a little like an electric motor, or a whir/whine.

No problems on gears, don't feel shudder, no knocks etc..

Any ideas on likely cause and if its anything I need to worry about?

That sounds like the clutch release bearing (otherwise known as a thrust bearing). These do get worn and can make a noise. I wouldn't worry unless it became significantly louder. Some cars have this noise for most of their lives.

Sitting at junctions or traffic lights with the clutch pedal down for long periods is the main cause for wear on these.

Ive not driven a ford that doesn't do this even my own car had a new clutch kit and the same noise though barely audible is there even ford admit that they have replaced gearboxes to have the same noise
