Egr Blanking Plate Already Fitted?

Featured Replies

Hiya.

So, I recently purchased an Egr blanking plate and today got the time to follow Lenny's guide and tried to fit it. After much twisting managed to get a good view where the plate is supposed to fit. Upon closer inspection, there seemed to be already a much thinner plate, with a ?lip - bit sticking out so you could hold it in place while fitting on it. I couldn't manage to get a picture of it in place.

My question is, what is the likelihood of an egr plate already fitted in my car given the fact that it's Uk model, was part of a fleet of cars and regularly serviced in the Uk by Ford only?

I also realised that I will definitely need help from someone mechanically minded to be able to fit the egr plate if required still.

Did you see the middle of the plate?/ was it solid? - it could just be a thin, steel gasket

Who knows - one of out members was at Ford and the head mechanic recommended fitting a blanking plate

FOCA, I think you nailed it there as it is definitely a thin metal bit and like you said, it probably is a steel gasket.

Still going to be a nightmare to fit it in though. I will definitely need help with is. Thanks for the clarification. Now I can try to fit the plate :P

There is usually a tabbed metal gasket fitted, definitely on my 1.8 anyway.

That's the word I was looking for "tabbed". Think the 1.6 and 1.8 tdci are similar in that way. Was it difficult to fit the blanking plate? Any tips/advice?

Thanks :)

On the 1.8 the hardest part is access as the egr sits just in front of the scuttle but the bolts face back towards the firewall.

A flexible ratchet worked for me.

Just loosen the bolts enough to pull the pipe away a bit and slide the plate in.

I used a bit of insulating tape like a handling tab stuck onto one side and made into a loop so I could put my finger through the loop and slide the plate in and adjust as necessary without too much fiddling or risk of dropping it through the engine bay and losing it in the undertray.

Once the plate was positioned properly I just peeled the tape away and tightened everything up.

Oh I like that idea a lot. Basically you made a disposable tab to be able to put the plate in place. Genius idea! My problem at the moment is my ratchet can't get to the bolts on the other side i.e no on the EGR itself but the left side where the cylinder sits. I am using Lenny's guide and it was suggested to loosen that bolt as well. Do I need to or just need to loosen the 2 bolts on the EGR and then try to fit it?

Cheers

yeah I have a tabbed gasket on my Mondeo, I really need to replace it as the EGR blank is blowing out a little exhaust and is turning the plate and the hoses around it a rusty water colour :p

But yes, it would seem its just the gasket.

My guess is its the gasket mate,

Ford mechanics generally love the egr as it kills turbo making overtime for them.

I can drop over some weekend and help you out if desired save you an hours labour in mechanic's

does anyone have the dimensions of the egr blanking plate ?

Pointless you driving the car over because it will be red hot by the time you reach my place an( too hot to work on especially since the egr is part of the exhaust system,

Ill happily drive over to your place no problem keep your engine cold,

i can remove wipers and scuttle panel aswell as metal support panel allowing full access to the egr valve and cooler,

Ill then point out the two bolts and one nut to you for removal as i cant bend over that far to undo those ones myself,

Will do me good to get away from Victoria  and i like driving, wont take quarter tank there and back.

Im working 7-3 on Saturday so Saturday evening around 17:30 may not suit you,

If it doesn't i can be in Tullamore for as early as 08:00am Sunday morning with the view of being complete by 10:30-11:00am that's not rushing the job neither leaving you the rest of the day free.

Lenny, first of all, thanks again for helping out. If you are coming over, I am paying for the diesel as that's the least I could do and I am buying you dinner as well :)

I am in Dublin actually on Saturday and anytime would suit me as I have no plans and Deirdre is working. I just googled it and it should be about 1hr drive. Let me know if that works for you and we can discuss it further via pm or I can call you, whichever is easiest.

Cheers again.

If you download torque pro app to your phone,

You will be able to view boost, torque etc.

Mainly though should the egr blanking show up an error you can reset it via the app on your phone through Bluetooth

99% unlikely to show up an error but still its a handy tool for torque and bhp etc.

Cheers for the info. I will get torque pro. Got the trial version as I have the above Bluetooth module in the car. It's been barely used to be honest. Didn't know you could use it to reset fault codes. Learnt something useful again today. Good week so far re learning bits and bobs for the car :)
