St170 Problems Help Please

Featured Replies

Hi I don't no if anybody can help, I have just bought a st170 2003 99k. I bought it cheap as it isn't running right the problem is

Between 1000rpm - 2200rpm there seems to be a slight missfire sort of feeling and engine doesn't sound right but above 2200rpm it feels fine maybe a little jerky but nothing like between lower revs

Car has had new coik pack leads and plugs but no difference. But I was also told the head has been of before I bought it because they thought a valve had dropped but it Hasent, so they put new head on skimmed it. Pressure tested ect all ok

Is there a chance the timing could be out??

Thanks

Try disconnecting the battery for half an hour, reconnect it then see if the fault comes back.

St170s do break the inlet runner control actuator (also called DSI clip), which in turn knackers the IMRC control box (silver box bolted to bulkhead behind inlet manifold). There is an uprated DSI clip from ford to replace the broken part, but you will also need to replace the IMRC control box.

Found this........

Is there any fault codes?

Hi there thanks for you help, no haven't got any faults code apart from p1000 which I think is common so you think it could be this?

Is there anyway of testing to see if it has failed?

Thanks

The dual inlet system on the ST170 switches it'self over each time you start the car or operate the ignition (I can't remember exactly which now). Think it parks on the open (high rpm) position then switches to closed (low rpm).

You should be able to see the cable operating it if you look towards the inlet manifold from around the airbox area, there'll be more photos on the web if you google it.

The manifold cable fitting failed on my first ST170 and it didn't cause any running issues at all - in truth if I'd not had an induction kit which made the change in engine note more noticeable when it switched over I'd never have noticed it wasn't actually working.

hi, right... my imrc is working fine i can see it moving how it should, i have just change all the spark plugs coil and leads again no difference, there is no air leaks at all! everything has been changed more or less still between 1k-3k bogging like its in a wrong gear and its at 500rpm if you no what i mean? the only thing i can think now is the timing out? because the head has been off from previous owner, it sounds like the cam inlet side is noisy as it sounds like its slapping/tapping noise could this be a symptom of a cam being out?

thanks

Timing could be out, if so the misfire/slapping sound could be a bent valve. Do a compression test.

But the car still goes like stink after 3000rpm is that right? Still could be a bent valve?

Here is a video of what it sounds like. Bare in mind it isn't under load and its a lot worst under load.
