Keeping The Winter Tyres Afterall

Featured Replies

Having gained some cash via selling my old iPhone and some Vegas winnings lol, I have kept the tyres I was selling and have purchased some 16" OZ Racing alloys (slightly marked) off ebay for £100 + postage.

They look decent and the PCD is bang on so they will fit. A mobile tyre fitter will only charge me £25 to fit and balance the lot.

I will regret this if we have another relentlessly mild winter like last time with hardly a frost let alone any snow. I would like to see first hand just how good these TS850's are. Amazing reviews.

Sub-zero temps and loads of snow please :driving:

Hmmm a always got told steel rims are best for winter tyres but don't forget winter tyres are for cold conditions not just snow and ice lol they give something like a third to half better grip on conditions lower than 7℃ but any higher temps they wear down easier :)

Yes Ive heard about the 7C or below benefits but last winter was so mild, it was really an extended autumn. Awful stuff.

RIght, jacked the car up today and the wheels fit just fine so I will deploy the mobile tyre fitter in due course to fit the winter tyres to the wheels, then the wheels to the car and balance them etc. (all for £25).

I forgot to unlock the car when jacking it up and the alarm went off lol. At least it proved it works! I had to borrow the neighbours jack and wrench from his Focus as I only have the repair kit.

Can anyone advise on some decent alloy paint to smarten them up a bit? They are curbed and a bit manky as you can see below. Cheers.

"a bit manky" thats an under statement.

Are you thinking of spraying over the scrapes & scratches?

Spend a bit more time and fill in and rub down, will look loads better.

To be honest, I have zero skills when knowing how best to approach alloy refurb but I would like them to look a bit smarter. I knew they were not going to look great when I purchased but I wasn't overly worried as I knew they would just get covered in grit and other crap over winter and then the lovely ST wheels would be saved such torment.

I know a guy who does alloy refurbs so perhaps he could just smarten them up a bit for reasonable money.

Just spoken to the guy I know and he will do a total refurb for £35 per wheel so £140 total. If I go ahead, that means a total outlay of £240 which is way cheaper than a new set of wheels would cost and these would be like new out of the shop once he has finished with them.

He will even do them in graphite colour for me if I like (defo go for that) and can source some plastic Ford inserts to replace those OZ racing one's which are also manky.

Thats more like it.
I couldnt drive around with manky wheels even in the dead of winter, especially driving an ST.

Agreed Paul. I was well pleased when the guy said he could spray them in that colour. He said each wheel took a few hours just to sand down because they were so manky!!

That's a reflection of the camera flash at the bottom by the way, not a mark lol

what winter tyres are you fitting on the rims

Continental TS850's. Awesome reviews so it's a shame I didn't get a chance to test them last winter on the ZS. Stupid mild weather!

Those look much better. They were wrecked before.
