Live Data Help... Advice Needed Please

Featured Replies

I have managed to hook up a scanner while using my phone and the app obd car doctor, i am looking at some live data and need some help.

Firstly its saying my Throttle position is at 12% on idle, that goes up to 15% when at 2k rpm... this is done with the car parked up, is that right, shouldnt it be at 0% percent as im not using the throttle.

My intake manifold absolute pressure is at 0.29 at idle and goes down to 0.24 at 2k rpm

Fuel level input is around 22% constant over the rev range.

Rpm at idle fluctuates between 740 and 810 roughly

Engine load at idle is between 19% and 21% fluctuates quite a bit.

Short term fuel trim is between -2.5% and 2.50% at idle

Long term fuel trim is at 2.34 contsant at idle and at 2k rpm is minus 0.77

Timing advance fluctuates between 0.0 and 4.0 at idle and around 31.0 at 2k rpm

This is all live data off my car i'm not really sure if this is all normal so hopefully someone out there knows a thing or 2 about this data.

I am slightly concerned by the tps sensor as when not pressed at all it was at 12% there was nothing impeding the pedal like a car mat, just seems wierd.

Also my car had no stored fault codes to review at all.

Any advice then guys

I have just taken the car for a spin down the main road. my focus was on this tps sensor data. i noticed when the car was switched off the tps read 17% throttle. i wasnt even pressing the throttle pedal. Then once the car was turned on it dropped to 14% and was quite hard to turn over though it did first time. Once i was driving i decided to see what full throttle was reading, to my suprise with with foot hard down to the floor it could not get is over 78.03%... i tried this 6 or 7 times and it would not go over that figure, the car was picking up some speed and when the foot was hard down it seemed to bog down aswell.

I also noticed after i lifted my foot up around 10% (from the floor) i got a big power surge from the engine, very wierd as i was backing off the accelerator. dont normally get more power when lifting. i guess the sensor is reading wrong so the air fuel mixture is off hence the hesitation and slight miss from the engine.

So i'm thinking a dodgy sensor here, ive got live data which i think back this up, anyone got any thoughts on this as i would very much appreciate it.

It could be dodgy tps Orr it could be that your throttle cable is stretched if this applies to your model mine read exactly the same and my throttle cable had stretched so just tightend it up and my throttle position read normal

Thanks Paul. I have no idea if that applies to my engine.

If I get five I'll take a photo of my cable then it will give u a idea as to what your looking for

Ok thanks mate

Here is the throttle cable on the accel pedal

And on the throttle body

And the cable running across the engine bay

Also here is my live data of my throttle in the idle position

And at full throttle

I see yours is at 18 percent and 90 at full throttle. I'm confused now. How would I adjust throttle cable and does or even need doing. And how do I do it

  • Author

It's weird as at idle the car feels ok. As soon as I start to put my foot down. There's nothing there. Loud engine very Corse, no power up the Rev range

I think your car is running on electric throttle body's if so I don't think they can be adjusted best bet mate is to talk to your local mechanic they wil have a better idea. Sorry i couldn't help u much

Thanks Paul for the advice and pictures. Much appreciated. Anyone else got any ideas. Anyone got live data from there 1.6 petrol as a comparison.

Dont rely too much on your local mechanic there are some right numptys out there, one of mine managed to put the bolt in skew wift and when i came to undo it to insert a blanking plate, it was threaded and snapped while trying to get it out.

First you need to see if your throttle is cable or electric, let us know cos that changes everything

Ok I'll check in a min. My guess is electric as it's a 2010 model

You have to bear in mind that the geeric adapters are just that - generic - they are not meant for specific motors, so dont have tolerances. so you have to take a lot of the data you see with a pinch of salt. Revs are fine, but some of the other figures will have thresholds that car doctor is not aware of, and it will impact.

The readings without the thresholds could give you a nightmare - you could be thinking you have failures left, right and centre, when in actual fact, they could be perfect where they are and dont require any efforts.

Is it normal though when you put your foot right down.... You don't get much power and as soon as I lift off to say 80 percent throttle you get a big power surge.

It also feels like since I put my last full tank if fuel in.... The car runs like a pig. I put a full tank of BP standard in and it does feel like crap. But my previous tank was shell v power with some Wynns fuel treatment. As I did a 400 mile round journey down to London and back. So I was hoping it would clean the whole engine out. It did feel a lot better but afterwards about 3 days later it runs rough again. Though that did coincide with filling up with bp.

That doesn't seem normal but it could be more likely to be a dirty fuel filter.

Problem is with that is that mine is built into the fuel pump. Not not replaceable unless entire fuel pump is changed

My bad I'm on the phone so didn't see the model.

If it's diesel then an egr blank would be in order

Try some Archoil 6400-D as well, that might clear the filter out a bit

Petrol matey. Sorry

Then its the Archoil 6400, should help dissolve anything blocking the filter

sorry I don't understand what a archoil 6400 is

Its a fuel additive that dissolves all the gunk and goo in the fuel lines and engine. Good stuff (as are all the archoil products)
