Driving An Ecoboost

Featured Replies

When you guys aren't trying to burn rubber and fancy a sedate drive, do any of you pull away at tickover rpm? This is what I do with my (don't laugh) 1.4 hi-torque Corsa, especially in traffic, it'll pull away well on hills too. I do this to try to minimise clutch wear (i think). Thing is, if I try this with the Ecoboost I'll only have a 1 litre engine until the blower kicks in. Any thoughts?

The ecoboost is long geared too, so will be harder to set off at tick over rpm, I used to reverse like that but not in 1st

Sounds like labouring the engine to me, not a good idea. Well I guess it's ok on a flat road or downhill if you're careful.

I don't know if this would minimise clutch wear, because you'll just be wearing the clutch for longer at lower RPM than setting off normally.

On flat I normally pull away in the ST at 1,500 rpm , is that similar to you Phil?

Yeah that's how I've always done it as long as I can remember. Any lower and it doesn't feel right.

4500rpm also works well ;)

you can to this with this ecoboost but only on flat road its designed to be punchy plus eco driving so longer gears make it harder on any hill etc i can hold the clutch (keep it at bite) on a steep hill (live near one) without touching the accelerator. :)

Lol yeah if you're drag racing. I've never tried that kind of fast start where you give it a lot of revs and dump the clutch, too scared I'll break the car.

Twenty four years ago, I once witnessed a “dumping the clutch” launch at Bruntingthorpe proving grounds when

Fast Car magazine was testing a Ford Cossie Sierra 500BHP prepared by Well Lane turbo centre in Leeds,

he left some wicked darkies for about 100ft.

I wouldnt have the heart to try that in an ecoboost, especially mine!.

1.0 Ecoboost easily pulls away on tickover and in fact requires very little throttle to get it moving afterwards.

Yeah dont need much to pull away myself, however I find slow 2nd gears not just so easy. Car doesnt really like pulling from say a slow junction where you are still moving slowly. I almost hope I get stopped so I can change into first again. Possibly down to my driving in which I was always told never to change down into first while moving.

I'm the same, if I'm going much less than 10 mph I'll gently put it into 1st, or sometimes 2nd and slip the clutch a bit. You can change into first while moving slowly, the gearbox won't let it go into gear if you're going fast enough for 2nd, or that's how it seems to me.

I hope you don't do that too often.

I sometimes let the car creep along in 1st or 2nd when in heavy traffic, just being careful that the engine doesn't start labouring if that makes sense. Does anyone know if that's not something you should do? The engine seems to try to stop the revs from dropping too low when doing this but not when going up hill. Although my first Fiesta would go uphill in 2nd with no revs lol.

Not that often a use my handbrake (hill start assist) but I wouldn't see why it would cause any damage as I'm using the clutch at its bite and it's revs the speed I need to hold the clutch anyway so not so different as in holding the clutch like everyone else on the road does with accelerator......... (btw it doesn't labour the engine either if you're wondering)

To be honest a don't see why not because ur not causing stress on the engine by labouring it and btw a said it would hold clutch n stay still on a hill a didn't mean moving up a hill lol n wow really? Lol how did you find this out :p
