How Low Does It Go?

Last few times I've had the chance I've tried to let my fuel get low to see when the fuel light comes on. I just like to know these things.

Today though I chickened out. I mean it was way in the red and still no light on. My range did still say about 56 miles tough. So when does it come?

My focus had 9 miles left according to the trip computer when I bought it, no issues.

I think the light comes on when the range is 50 or below.

When I picked my zetec s up when I bought it they'd left me with 10 miles of range left, my fuel light usually comes on with about 50 or so miles left

When my fuel warning light comes on, it shows 50 miles to go and, although I should not have done it, I let it go down from 50 to 0 and I still got home with around 2 miles to go - I must have been running on fumes.

The next morning I drove to my nearest garage to fuel up but I had all my fingers and toes crossed in the hope that my car would not die on me.

Obviously, I would not advise anyone else to try this and I have never done it since.

That's risky willy. What if the garage you rolled up to was shut...eek

You'll also be dragging up the dirt. I plan to fill up just before the light each time but want to at least see it once as wondering if it also beeps or chimes ?

When I bought my current car the fuel range read 10 miles.

By the time I got it to the nearest garage it was on 3 miles.

I try to never run below 1/4 tank if I can help it.

Thats what I never really understand. Our fiesta have a range of say 400 miles give or take. My bro has a merc that costs a fortune to fill but has a range of about 800 miles apparently. Wonder what makes them decide the range to weight ratio. Ie. Why is my brothers tank not half the size with same range as us.

I always do a low fuel run at weekends over the moors! Word of advice, the range calc only seems to go one way. For example, iof i'm down hill the fuel swishes to the front of the car and according the fuel gauge my fuel goes down, when i go up hill, the needle goes back up. The range calculator only seems to go down for me and never up. I live in hilly north england, so sometimes it the range can say 20 miles remaining but i'm on the flat with plenty of fuel on the needle but still in the red. Not a big deal, just worth remembering.

This is also shown that if your at say 10-20 miles of fuel remaining and you put £5 worth of fuel in, the needle will go up, but the range will stay the same.

I've hit 0 a few times on the m4. Rapidly my speed slows down at <10 miles to a 50mph! Refuse to pay motorway services prices!

The low fuel warning appeared on my new Toy X automatic at 40 miles. The petrol gauge was only just in the red section.

I don't know about the miles, but I had a look and everytime the light goes on its at 75km till empty (trip computer) but in real world I wonder.

talking about filling large fuel tanks, we had a Toyota land cruiser with a 120 liter fuel tank, try wrapping your head around that one.

120l x R13.30 for diesel here at the coast = R1596.00 in todays money.

The Pound has never been as strong as these days,R17 for one pound so thats about 94 Pounds for the tank of diesel

Did a zero miles as I stopped at the pump again lol

Embarrassingly, for the first time in 5 years of car ownership, I stupidly pulled the nozzle out whilst my fingers were still on the trigger! Only a ickle bit of a spillage lol

Lol sean. I hate spillage. Even a little drip on the bodywork, then you find the garage doesn't have wipes.
