Wow, that's bad.

I think most people would have done what he did and thought nothing of leaving the engine running while moving the sign... I would have anyway...

I would too but not anymore!

One benefit of keyless entry, the keys would have been in my pocket.

Doesn't stop them driving away unless they stall it though, would just keep bonging about no key.

Really?

So if the car lost connection with the transponder in the key, the engine would still run?.

If I get out the car with the keys in my pocket and the engine running it keeps going just has a message on the display saying key outside car and a loud bonging noise.

Will have to test this out.

Perhaps transponder verification is only required to start the engine, and will keep running if you accidently toss the fob out the window for safety reasons?.

I don't know if there is any timeout on it, but the engine will definitely keep running when you take the keys out the car.

Yeh I've tested this out before - all the while the door is open it says nothing but as soon as you close it the noise starts and a message appears in the centre screen. The car is still driveable, at least for a couple of hundred feet or so! I did this in a pretty empty carpark for what it's worth, not on a public road where the engine cutting out would have caused problems!

Harsh! So no blame apportioned to the thieving piece of scum that hopefully will wake up dead?

Its easy to say he shouldve done xyz now. However also consider if he'd have turned off engine, taken keys, dead locked door and put a wheel clamp on, that the theif might have jumped him anyway and caved his head in before stealing his car.

My only thought is how the insurance company reacted. Anyone know ?

This took place not far from me. Certainly somewhere you drive with the doors locked.

I hope the insurance company have paid out. But they will say he left the car unattended with the keys in it.

In my 1series I had keyless entry and the engine wud cut Owt after they was not present for 1 minute

It would be interesting to see if the Ford's do this, although I have often been outside the car de-icing it with the engine running for more than a minute...

I found it to be quite hit n miss some times even when the key was in car it wouldn't recognise it was in the car

Plus you would think there would be an automatic cut off when the car gets out of range of the fob

I did this with a friend i had the keys and he drove my car around the block that was atleast half a mile to a mile, I don't think there is any time out to kill the engine.

I have in the past done exactly what this lad done, early morning there were rubbish bags in the road from fox trying to find food I assume, I stopped with the engine running, at that point the engine was still warming up, had the keys on me and moved the bags onto the side of the pavements. I would be gutted myself if that happened to me, on a morning to work getting car jacked, I don't think it would have been worth switching off the engine either way that guy had a plan to steal a car, and since he tried to run the guy over I don't doubt he would have use violence in Other ways if the engine wasn't already running

Too much for one soul to handle
