Frustrated With Surge

Featured Replies

Hi, very new to this so here goes.

Had the car since new, my dream car, noticed a slight surge on the throttle between 1250 and 1500 revs, especially when trying to regulate the speed in traffic about 25 mph. sometimes it is minor other times it is violent and even the rev counter needle jumps up and down. The only way to control it is to lift off completely and try again. As time has gone on it has got worse but not every time, so hard to demonstrate to local agent, although have managed it, but it was not very severe that day. Next day going up ramp in local car park it would not behave at all, we have all had these days haven't we.

Any body got any ideas? Agent suggests waiting till it is regular and continuous to help them but I am running out of patience and ideas.

The car also does other weird things, anybody noticed the wipers going onto intermittent with the headlights on every time you stop? Mine does. The cruise also does not work properly above about 15 degrees ambient and around 1250 revs and even as high as 50 mph on a slight hill the speed has dropped off.

Ford came up with some story about the engine management and higher ambient temperature meaning it needed less fuel and so cruise would not hold! No other vehicle I have driven has ever done that.

Well that's about it. If those few bits worked well my love affair with Ford and this car would be great but at the moment it is faltering badly.

Any ideas please guys and gals.

My 1.8 Petrol surges mainly when trying to park the car. Once parked it settles again, only does it though at very low speeds. My brother's 2.0 TDCi 59 plate Mondeo does the same. I think it is very common, my brother had the theory that the car does it to stop it stalling when parking. It is annoying but I have got used to it for the most part. If it is a fault I would be interested in finding out as mine is under warranty for another 2 months and I can get it sorted for free.

In some cases if the ECU detects a potential stall condition it will increase engine revs itself - noticed this on one of my Fords a long time ago as I didn't like the way it took over things by itself. It's done to prevent stalling which can lead to unburnt fuel entering the cat and possibly igniting which doesn't do the cat any good.

Too much engine oil can make the engine surge.

wipers indeed do slow down if you stop and resume normal play once you move on.

Theres my 2 penneth lol

Thankfully mine has the right amount of oil, I am finickity about stuff like that!
