Hi all, got these 205/40/17 the other day. Thing is the lad said they came of his focus but they seem to be a tad wider than the arch. Id say about 1cm wider. Ive researched it but no one seems to know the answer. They dont rub when i turn drives ok. What you guys think the pic is from driver side front wheel. Cheers

They look like they are on spacers.

Normally when you get a deeper alloy they go further in to the arch rather than out....?

I take it there weren't some old spacers stuck on them?

No spacers as what i can see. Ive been reading and alot people seem to say 10mm is ok aslong as the tred is under the arch? There nice rims only paid 40 for them.

Nothing on tread or wheels showing in C&U so folks saying tread shouldn't be visible have no factual basis, but Part II section K 63 controls wheel covers

"Every Vehicle shall be equipped with wings or other similar fitting to catch, so far as practical, mud or water thrown up by the rotation of the wheels"

Taken that "wings" should extend beyond the wheel/tyre combo to catch spray, There are measurements on the amount or arc of wheel that should be covered

Also requirement that no part of wheel should be danger to pedestrian or other vehicle

Having been off roader and member of GLASS for many years I know of many 4x4's that have points for exposed tyres. Simple rubber Arch extension solves the issue or get your arches rolled

Hi cheers, shame tho as these alloys are matt black and go well on the car. Would i have the same issue if i put st170 wheels on as i think there 215/45??

Look fine on a landy, but not on Foci!, get your arches rolled,

Where do they do these wheel arch roll and are they worth it?

Any good body shop should be able to do it

Lever bolts onto your wheels and uses a big roller to bend out your existing arches

But on Focus Mk3 I think some of arches may be plastic and that wont deform

Also found the EU directive that covers tyres, clearly states that WHOLE TYRE must be covered and this supersedes UK C&U regs

Does this cost much and take long to do? Or is it a job i could do myself??

It's a skilled job, you need the correct roller tool and a little skill to be able to do it without damaging paint etc

Problem may be the later focus's uses plastics on panels, you need to check if the wheel arches are metal all way round

Also the wheel liners etc. may not fully fit afterwards, you would need to check

as for cost, I've no idea, Never had it done

Wider tyres also put more strain on steering components, make sure your bushes and joints are up to it

Been doing some more ready up on these rolling the wings. And from what i can see its mainly people That have issue with there tyres rubbing on the arches ect. Mine dont i can still turn fine and still have loads off room between the arch and tyre. The only thing i see is that they would just adjust the top of arch to cover the top of the wheel is that right?

Ive been redoing all the suspension parts and replacing all bushes front and back.

Thats the rear wheel, there is plenty of room between the tyre and arches and there is no rubbing. I dont think getting the arches rolled will look right from what ive seen. Lol

Nice looking wheels but a large offset from the disk. You sure they are not the back wheels and the other 2 are slightly less offset, or that there isn't a spacer jammed on the inside?

There rotational tyres? Silly question but is that possible that the front wheels have a different offset to the others? Didnt realise this could be the case. I didnt see or notice any spacers when i picked the wheels up from a fellow focus mk1 owner. The tyres are 205/40/17 would changing then down to 195/40/17 help???

People often put wider spacers on the rears, or wider rims, also many tread patterns are directional as well, look at the markings on the tyre walls to make sure. Were all 4 wheels identical?

All that would happen if you put the smaller tyres on is the car would sit a fraction lower and the rubber would have 1cm less on the ground, the width is mainly set by the rim. You can get the stupid chav look by putting narrow tyres on a wider rim, the rubber still has to go to the rim edge, but they think all that extra rubber on the ground they are missing (The whole point of wider tyres) looks cool. Instead it just means that the tyre is at rim contact angles never intended and likely to roll off the rim pretty easily and the bill are going to hassle them

The 40 isn't a size, its a ratio

In your case its not the tyre size that's the issue, its that the wheel offset is strange for your car. You can see that by how far the new rims are away from your disks. The wheel should sit inboard more. This means your track width is now wider, your steering ratio has been changed, as will your turning circle and the leverage on your track rod ends is increased. Effectively you have put massive 40mm spacers on. That's why everyone is asking if there are spacers attached to the inside of the wheels

As for spacers, just look in the inside of the new wheels where they attach to the car, Spacers would be extra metal rings

But normally spacers either

a) attach to your hubs like normal wheels and then have a second set of bolts to attach your wheels to the spacers or

b) have a extra long set of bolts that go through wheel and spacer

Due to the studs being on the hubs on a Focus the type a) is for our cars. Cant see how a spacer could be permanently fitted to the wheel and still be able to fit wheel onto standard studs, Postive offset wheels do the same as spacers but without the potential extra stud failure points

What i might do in the morning is swap a rear for a front. All tyres are 205/40/17 and all directional the treads where different and the wheel them selfs all looked the same at a glance. So there is no other way of changing the offset or would it be worth me putting some stocks on the car till i find some that fit better

Hi just had a look and the passenger side seems to be flush with the wing and same for passenger rear. Weird wonder what this could be. If uploaded more pics the first pic is front driver side then passenger side front. Some pics rear passenger side seems ok yet driver side seems alittle off. Im thinking get some continental on them. Unless some else can be done??

Put the passenger rear on the Drivers front and all will be well then!
