Unsure On Diesel Sounds.

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

I've recently bought a MK2 1.8 TDCI Titanium Estate, mileage is slightly high at 105K but is backed up by a full service history.

Being my first diesel, I must admit that I'm unfamiliar with the sounds they should (and shouldn't!) make, aswell as being a tad paranoid.

I've had a good listen to the engine and there's a few sounds I'm unsure about, I've managed to catch them all in 2 videos that I hope you guys don't mind me showing.

The first video is of the engine bay in general, but more specidially what I'd call a hissing noise coming from the left hand side, underneath the radiator fluid resevoir.

The second video is a noise apparent on engine shut off. A few seconds after switched the ignition off, there are 3/4 clip type sounds followed by what I assume is the EGR Value closing.

1).

2).

Any thoughts are genuinely appreciated,

Cheers :)

Have you taken of the engine cover and then looked at any of the pipes, mainly the coolant pipes give them a squeeze.

As for the clicking it does sound like the EGR.

Ah, not taken the cover off. Should've done that so will definatly have a nosey about under there, thanks.

Yep, as above the clicking is the EGR self-check, perfectly normal.

I can't hear a hiss on the other video, but if its from the coolant bottle, some air may be let out through the bottle cap as the coolant expands. But there are also boost hoses running past there, it's possible that one of them is leaking air at a join and just needs the jubilee tightening.
