Help: How Effective Are Replacement Engines? Or Is It Not Worth It?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have a Ford Fiesta Style 2007 and I've smashed my engine block - reading that sounds like i'm at some kinda AA meeting.

I'm in a real pickle, do I buy a replacement engine from the local parts dealer who says it's come outta a written off car and it's not refurbished. Or do I sell the car on ... ?

I need to make a quick decision on this one.

I rely on my car and love the little thing. It's done 127,000 miles and is a great runner. The only problem is it needs a new engine.

I've found an engine for £390 and I expect fitting to take the cost up to near £1,000.

What I need answered are ... Has anyone got experience putting another engine in their car? How did it run? Is it OK to do this .. ? Or is replacing the heart of your car something that never goes well?

If the suggestion is it's fine to replace the engine and it should run fine. Will other parts have to removed, like the water pump and cambelt, for the engine to go in? Because this would obviously increase the overall cost massively ... Making me ask the question, is the 2007 Fiesta worth saving?

Really appreciate any advise guys ... Cheers

How much would you be able to buy a similar car for? Also factor in what you could sell your car for (either whole or bit by bit)

A 2nd hand replacement engine has the same gamble as a 2nd hand car...with the extra added worry about the quality of work that's been undertaken.

You also run the risk of unexpected costs mounting up

I wouldn't bother personally, however others may recommend it.

Sent from my iPad using Ford OC

I personally would swap the engine, put a new belt and water pump on the replacement before fitting, cuts down a lot of time, can be done in a day, if I was still in somerset I would have done it for you, if you find someone that does it on the side you could have it changed for around £250, I may know someone that can do it that is in Glastonbury for that sort of price

I'm with David here, personally I would go for it.

I have swapped a few engines like for like now, just done one on Friday actually. If care is taken to make sure everything goes back as it should then everything should be fine.

I would prefer to see the engine still in the car as it gives an indication as to why it's there in the first place.

Cheers all. I'm gonna call a couple of garages this morning to see how much it'll cost to fit a spare engine and if any more costs would be incurred during the process.

Because I changed my Cam Belt in 2013 after hitting 100,000 miles. Earlier this year I needed to change my water pump due to a blown head gasket - I know my poor car - and they had to whip the new Cam Belt off to get to the pump, therefore costing me an extra £900 in the process!!!

Also,

If the engine swap doesn't come off ...

What's the best way to sell my car and where? On eBay as a "non runner" ???

I'll keep you all posted and thanks again

Cheers for the advice fellas.

As an added extra, can anyone recommend somewhere to get a replacement Ford engine?

Cheers

I am with matt and Sean here, I think it's a big gamble that could pay off but the bill could be more than the car is worth, epically if you have already spent £900.00 on it recently.

With garage labour on that particular car, I probably wouldn't think it's worth it.

Ebay or gumtree as a non-runner and buy another.

That said, I have swapped a few engines myself. Most recently I bought a whole rear ended written off car for cheap, the engine ran after I fiddled with a few bits so knew it'd work fine in the other car - I wouldn't have chanced it without hearing it run first! It worked perfectly and is still going strong with it's new owner now. BUT it was only worth doing as I could do it myself without labour costs...I could also sell off a few parts from the written off car so the engine ended up costing me nothing lol.

900 Quid to change the water pump ? Turpin garages ?

No one can predict the condition of a used engine unless it can be seen running and tested. It could be a good one or it could be a complete liability / money pit .

It should cost no more than 300 quid to take out and replace an engine in a Fiesta unless your are replacing the timing belt the water pump and tensioners and taking the gearbox off to check the clutch.
