Hiya :-)

I am now on my 2nd letter to garage all have been recorded delivery :-)

Put oil for the dpf in my car on Friday so going to do the motorway revs today hopefully it clears the dpf then just have to do the egr valve.

My mother in law has said that cost doesnt matter regarding the garage as long as he gpes to court for what he has done.

Thanks for everyones help :-)

I've got a PDF document I can send you which details the small claims court fees if you want a copy. For example, more than £3,000 claimed in court = £335 fee to get the ball rolling.

Yes please that would be great. Well was out last night and now the oil light is coming on when i break and when i sit still :( it did this before and my turbo went so booked in at garage today if its going to cost alot im thinking of trading it in for another ford diesel

I'll send it later. You can't trade the car in for another and go to court by the way or you won't have anything to reject under SOGA.

Probably the turbo getting starved again if they didn't clean it up properly the first time...

Update on my car :(

Good news: dpf cleared woohoo lol.

Bad news: turbo has blew again garage repaired it and took for a test drive and it blew again :( so he hasn't a clue what's causing it to blew another turbo being delivered tomorrow if it blows to then he said it must be a under lying problem with the car.

Other good news I have sent all 3 letters with no reply so now has a case to go to court with.

Thanks again for everyone's help

its an under lying problem they really should have picked up on by now, I cant believe they are going to slap another one in, unless they fix the problem, more than likely lack of oil, its just going to pop that as well. Unless that's their plan, rack up the charges then just say they doing what you told them to do, could a garage really get away with that though?

I think something must be blocking the oil or something but he didnt even do half a mile with the car when it blew :( they giving another turbo a shot if it doesnt work then im without a car :( lucky he has took some money off labour

I wouldn't have paid for any more repairs to be honest. It's a bit contradictory to rejecting the car and seeking a refund under SOGA. That said, you can always put any money spent on repairs on the claim form.

If the court said no to rejection and refund, you have a right to a repair or replacement. That is of no cost to you though compared to work he does that isn't under warranty.

These engines are well known for blocking the oil ways with carbon deposits. This is what starves the turbo bearings of oil and ultimately kills it.

At very least they need to replace the oil pump and turbo oil lines, as well as cleaning out the sump and then flushing the system two or three times. I guarantee the next turbo will blow just like the others have done if they do not do that.

what amazes me is that a 30 second google would have told them all of that, is there any grounds for come back if the garage is incompetent? I mean, if they did a service and forgot to put oil in again id expect them to be liable for the damage, is it the same for this?

I'm not sure googling is what most mechanics do when they see what appears to be a simple turbo change job. Though after another has blown you'd think they would lol!

Unfortunately you often also get older mechanics that think they know everything because they've been doing it for the last 40 years. Don't get me wrong I'm sure they could set up a carb much better than I could...but I've met quite a few that don't have specific newer tech knowledge and can't be told either.

The garage will be doing what the customer has asked, which is replace the turbo, rectify the lack of power etc. Unless it's stated in their jobsheet to replace and clean other parts I really don't think there'd be any comeback on that unfortunately.

Thanks for the reply :) i have decided to sorn my car until i can get somewhere with car i bought it from. As they are charging a fortune gor something they cant fix :(

Welcome, Kirsty2503, to the world of the 1.6TDCi.

Firstly, some of the MOT regulations have changed already (16 Feb 2014 ) so having the DPF gutted will, if detected, fail your MOT. When mine was "fixed" the regulation hadn't been changed but I got the heads up from my MOT station when I had the car MOT'd last year ( 6 days before the rule change came into force ). I guess the advice here is "don't mention it to the MOT station and see if they find it." Stricter emissions testing is on it's way. DPFs are a quarter of the price they were when mine was done so I'm looking to reinstall before next MOT.

Because the engine recirculates exhaust gases, to preheat the mixture at start up and to improve emissions, Any soot from the combustion process, gets recirculated too. This gets in the oil.

The Turbo uses the main oil as a lubricant. This is picked up from the sump [bottom of the engine] by the a pick up feeder tube which has a filter in the end of it. This filter gets clogged up by the soot in the oil.

As TomsFocus points out this must be cleaned or the Turbo will be starved of the oil, which is where the Turbo Failure comes from. The general consensus of opinion is to fit a blanking plate between the EGR valve and the engine block, to prevent these exhaust gases going back around. The oil is then kept cleaner for longer. The plates are very cheap, from Ebay, and fitting takes 10 mins.

That sounds like a wise decision. :)

I hope you've got another car or form of transport to get round in the meantime though, walking everywhere in this weather can't be nice!
