Headlights Not Far Enough!

Featured Replies

The headlights in the mk7/7.5 don't bother me that much but wish they would go a little further I remember seeing some people talking about it but couldn't find it lol.

Is there a way to make the light travel further?

Do you have the adjustment set too low ? Try the adjustment wheel on the panel below the steering wheel

If you get upgraded bulbs you will realise how rubbish the standard bulbs are.

I've complained about this before, as far as I can tell it's how the headlights are designed. Even set to zero (the highest angle for the lights) the dipped beam seems "too dipped". It was the same on the MK7, and I mentioned it to a dealer who checked it and said they were set up correctly. Can anyone confirm if this is correct?

If the angle of the light really was too low they wouldn't pass an MOT I think, so it's probably something we just have to put up with. That said it is quite bad that you can't see very far ahead. On unlit roads at night I don't like going more than about 50 unless I can use my full beam, because I just can't see far enough ahead. I didn't have that problem with my old MK6, but as I said it seems to be just the way the cars are designed. Maybe it's safer overall because you're less likely to dazzle other drivers.

As Phil just mentioned its maybe something i will have to live by.My settings are on zero and also have upgraded bulbs (cool blue intense) and i did see a difference when putting new bulbs in but as phil has said its just too dipped for faster traveling i think i drive down alot of country roads and i have to use my main beam now and again to angle myself through the roads and I also think its maybe because Im still used to how much light my last car was giving off (fiesta mk6.5) thats lights were amazing! but I might have to look into HiDs that willy has got they look good (dont look like hids) and light travels further

Also i know i can get nightbreaker unlimiteds but they dont last long to be honest and ive just heard of philips xtreme vision plus but dont know how long they last either

Night breakers are top notch bulbs, light is 180degrees all round the front of the car, beam travels for ages and the light is crisp and white - not sure how long they last but had heard good things previous to buying them. Don't have dipped beams yet but was gonna go for the Philips on those too!

if you put nightbreaker unlimiteds in the dipped beam (h7) you will see a definite difference. they have a longer beam and crisper beam therefore enhancing your vision on the road. I had 1 bulb go after 8 months.

I have night breakers in both as they are fantastic! No issues with light output or angle with those imo

Yes the Night Breakers are great for full beam, big improvement over standard. I also got them for the fogs. It doesn't matter that they are a bit yellow because they aren't used often, but that's why I wouldn't like them for dipped beam.

On the top of each headlight there are white/cream coloured plastic screws park your car in about 12 feet away from a wall turn on your lights open your bonnet and screw each side to raise them up. The lights should be no higher than bonnet level on the wall from 12 feet.

Thanks for the info, I might have a look next time I find somewhere level to park and see how much lower than bonnet level they are.

ahh nice

If you raise the lights up by this method, isnt it going to dazzle oncoming drivers?

thats what the dial on the inside is for :P a guess

No. Not if you do like I said. Same hight as bonnet from 12 feet is legal limit.

By the way it was one of the first things I done with my Ford. I have drove in the night and never had any flashers/complaints.

That's handy, makes it clear that it is ok for the owner of the car to adjust it, whereas I assumed it was only something that should be done at a dealer.

When you say no higher than bonnet level, do you mean the height of the front edge of the bonnet? Isn't the actual rule more specific, because obviously each car has different lights and bonnet? The YouTube vid says to line up the beams with the centre of the lights, or a bit lower if they are HIDs, that's basically the same height as the front of the bonnet on a Fiesta isn't it? Although that's clearly an American video so maybe their rules are different, and it says 25ft from the wall instead of 12.

Edit: here's a useful page I found: http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_180.htm

Looks like the first image (European 'E' Beam) is the one we have.

so same as bonnet? in middle?

Right not home yet but done a rough guide a measured it at 12ft away from a fence and used ma legs to measure am taking the light should reach bonnet at 12ft mines is 4-5 inches short! Car light nothing else btw :p lol

The problem is you need to be able to park somewhere that's perfectly flat and level with 12ft plus the length of the car from a wall to do it properly. I don't know of anywhere like that, except maybe some car parks.
