Headlights Not Far Enough!

Featured Replies

@Phil. when I got my focus the first thing I done was adjust the lights as they were way too low. But I knew straight away where to adjust them on the headlights and likewise I automatically adjusted them to 12 feet bonnet hight. It's like one of those things you just knew but I don't remember where from! I always had it at 10-12 feet and anything over that was illegal!

If they are dangerous low for you to drive safety I would just park outside the house adjust then about an inch higher and take a spin. If their okay just stick with that if they are a tad too high just use the in car adjuster to bring them down a bit!

When you say no higher than bonnet level, do you mean the height of the front edge of the bonnet? Isn't the actual rule more specific, because obviously each car has different lights and bonnet? The YouTube vid says to line up the beams with the centre of the lights, or a bit lower if they are HIDs, that's basically the same height as the front of the bonnet on a Fiesta isn't it? Although that's clearly an American video so maybe their rules are different, and it says 25ft from the wall instead of 12.

Edit: here's a useful page I found: http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_180.htm

Looks like the first image (European 'E' Beam) is the one we have.

The problem is you need to be able to park somewhere that's perfectly flat and level with 12ft plus the length of the car from a wall to do it properly. I don't know of anywhere like that, except maybe some car parks.

after this adjustment, what setting should be on the dial on the inside, with just 2 adults in the front seats

If you've got the manual adjusting wheel, and mainly carry the same number of passengers etc then I'd be tempted to put the wheel in a mid position then tweek the manual adjusters (noting how many extra turns used) until you get the balance a bit better - i.e. can see further ahead but not OTT so you're dazzling oncoming drivers.

Doing this with the wheel in a mid position then gives you some leeway if you want to temporarily raise or lower the beams a bit.

What he said. Although I would leave my in case settings to the highest so you could adjust them to the perfect level after! That way it's handy for carrying a load, and of course even better when you get some ar*****e. That's gonna be up your a**e one night overtaking on a bendy road. That's the time I like to let them overtake me and stay behind them with the adjustment up to the highest. .
