Check the cables under the gear lever shroud, the ball joints sometimes pop off.

Sometimes the cables go rusty, have a look and try a squirt of WD40.

Hi there in response to your 1st gear problem, I had this kind of problem on my mk6 Zetec s

It turned out to be the gear linkage on the front of the gearbox. It went worse after a trip through a flood. There is a cover on the front of the box covering the linkage. Try lubricating it there.

Really really weird problem. Seemed to be fine the next morning and has been ever since?
