Got My Focus Remapped Today

Well, i got my 1.6 TDCI 110bhp remapped this morning.

Before the remap the guy doing it said it should bring the car up to around 140bhp so that sounded good to me. I also told him that in particular I wanted more low end torque for easier driving.

I got a call then after an hour and a half to say the remap was done so I went to collect the car. The fella told me that he probably didn't get it up as much as he hoped to because the DPF was quite clogged and the egr valve needed a bit of cleaning. He did a forced DPF regeneration to try clear some of the soot and I could see a mark on the ground bellow the exhaust from all of this soot. He advised me to clean the egr valve and possible down the line remove the dpf.

He also told me that I might not feel the full difference immediately but over the next week of regular driving it should become a bit faster.

On the drive home to be honest I really didn't notice much of a difference at all. There's possibly a bit more of boost mid range, but no difference low range and doesn't feel like 140bhp. I've read people saying remapping has completely transformed how their car drives but I can't say the same, definately doesn't feel like €275 worth of a difference anyway. He said that two faults came up on his diagnostics for the DPF and the EGR but I didn't get any warning lights on my dash. I also told him I blanked my EGR last week so maybe that's why and he recommended I unblank it and clean it out as the turbo needs some of the gas recirclant for better boost.

I'm wondering firstly is their any truth in the fact that it could take over a week to feel the full extent of the remap?

And also if the dpf has a bit of a build up could that sap alot of the power I had hoped to gain from the remap?

Feeling a bit dissapointed at the moment :(

unfortunately i agree with this quote. the chaps lying. all maps are instant. ive had a few cars mapped and this is what should happen and not a blooming week later. get a refund.

That's dissapointing to hear!

Is there any common reason for this?...As in why would he not be able to remap the car correctly?

These are the fault codes I got in the diagnostic report:

Diesel (G8DA - Duratorq-TDCi - ->03/08)

DTC Description

P0299 - Turbo / Super Charger Underboost

- Intermittent

P2458 - Particle filter regeneration duration

- Intermittent

P1402 - EGR system fault

- Intermittent

P1402 - EGR system fault

- Intermittent

Get EGR Cleaned and use Dipitene mixture through diesel for 1 month. Also change oil and get bung in sump changed

Yes mate you should feel the difference straight away. Especially as much as 30bhp of a difference.

My mate got it done on vw Passat a while ago. he never mentioned it to me. I needed the car one day and as soon as I got into the car I knew there was a difference. First thing he asked me was did I notice anything different about the car.

There was a good bit of difference in it, very noticeable. So I recon you would notice it easy enough.

Without sounding nasty but there is a lot of people out there saying they can remap cars and havnt got a clue what they are doing. sometimes it can be worth spending an extra few quid and going somewhere that the tuner has a good reputation.

Even a hand held one.

If the guy got these error codes up. Why did he carry on with the remap ?

I had been doing a bit of research the last few months on remapping and this particular fella seemed to have good reviews which is why I went with him.

Should he not of gone ahead with mapping it if the ECU was throwing out those fault codes in the first place?

As I said I feel there amy be a small increase in power mid range...but if I drove the car and I wasn't told it was remapped I never would suspect that it was...

I could be wrong. But I don't think I would have gone ahead with the remap if it was throwing up error codes. I would have addressed these first. but like I say I could be wrong in thinking this. Someone will hopefully confirm this soon.

As for you saying if you had not been told it was remapped you wouldn't have suspected it was. You should have defo notice a remap.

I got a remap years ago on my E90 and it was like night and day.

Unfortunately I was only made aware of those fault code when the map was done and I was collecting the car. I never really even considered whether the remap should have gone ahead with those codes or not.

The difference isn't day or night for me anyway...I think there's a small bit of extra power mid range but then again I don't know if it's because I'm pushing the car a bit harder to see if there's any difference. As you said and what I've always though is you would notice a remapped car instantly.

Hopefully someone who has there Focus remapped or anyone that has a good knowledge on this will shed some light as I will be making contact with the remapper looking for a fix or my money back otherwise!

Did you not get a rolling road BHP chart, before and after?

Cant map a car properly without a rolling road. If not you are just being given a map that's worked in some other car, a car that's got different wear, use, performance etc, air filter, fuel pressure than yours. One map doesn't fit all

A map is immediately noticeable, you can feel even 5 BHP changes quiet easily. Sounds like he has just charged you for a fault code read

Sorry Dave I obviously didn't put it down correctly.

What I ment was maybe the tuner shouldn't have gone ahead with the remap. I would have thought the guy might have called you or something to say you have some errors on your car. would you like to get these sorted out first before going ahead with the remap.

But like I said. I could be wrong in saying it would be better getting the errors fixed first.

But I did notice a big difference in my E90. went from 163bhp to around 190bhp. car revved quicker, faster acceleration etc.

Im getting the ST done soon. but Im just going for the Dreamscience remap.

Get him to put it back the way it was, it'll have just been an OBD flash and he should have kept the original in case it didn't work out so well. fix the problems then go else where. If they refuse I don't really know where you stand short of paying someone to see if its maps have been changed then going to claims court.

You will have noticed a huge difference with the car though

No I didn't get a rolling road because the guy tuning the car travelled down to me, he does a mobile service and because of work I was finding it hard to get time to go somewhere with a rolling road so thought this would be handier.

I rang the remapper there saying I wasn't happy with it and he as adimate that the problem was the EGR and DPF.

He advised me to clean out the EGR first of all and see if that made any difference. He also said to take the car for a run for about 20mins, at about 100km in 3rd gear and that might clear out the DPF. After that he said if I'm still not happy he can either come back to me and map it again or I can go to his garage in Westmeath which i think has a rolling road which I wouldn't mind getting tested.

I'm a bit annoyed at myself now because I should of got it done with a rolling road since they can alter the performance and gain levels to suit my specific car depending on what the car's output is...up until now i really only thought it was for getting a print out to say your car went from 109bhp to 143bhp or whatever.

I wouldn't have though that the DPF could affect power that much, especially low down in the revs it's a bit sluggish. Does it have that dramastic a reduction in power with a relitavely clogged one?

Got my 1.6TDCi remapped at the same time as the dpf came out and I do notice the difference when I drive hard, but not really when I potter along. The mpg was significantly improved though, which I was told is a combination of not having to regen any more and the remap adding a good amount of torque low down in the range. There were loads of dpf related codes and warning lights because it had reached the end of its life, and these disappeared with the remap. The effect was instant as well.

South_Bound did they tell you what type of gains you got in bhp or torque with your remap?

What I really was hoping to achieve was more low down torque and the turbo kicking in lower down the rev range. That way I would use less fuel as not having to rev as much, car would be easier to drive and would also have more power. Unfortunately I have the opposite, slight bit more power mid range (not much) and no extra low down pull :(

If the guy has a decent reputation like your research suggested then maybe give him the benefit of the doubt?

Are the fault codes still present on your car or did he mean they were found and cleared before he flashed in the new map? If they are still coming up then that does suggest something is actually amiss that the car is not happy with.

Try what he's suggested and if there's no difference then get your cash back and go for a map from a more established tuner.

While custom maps set-up on a rolling road are the most ideal way to remap a car there are still a lot of maps out there which give very good performance increases without being custom written. Some of the adaptive capabilities of the ECU must give scope for variations for wear and different combinations of parts on the car - or at least to within the new targets and parameters the remap is working to.

One thing a rolling road will show though is the before and after power curves - so you'll have a better understanding of where the gains have been made and any losses too. There's a lot more to it than just a quoted power increase especially if you consider how often you're revving the car to it's peak power rpm. Torque curve will show a better picture in lot of cases and that's what you physically feel through the seat of your pants.

He did tell me but I forget the actual numbers - I wasn't looking for outright power so I think it was something like 130BHP. The guy I went to specialises in dpf deletes and remaps and writes his own code - he has done a good number of Focus and so had a suitable map ready to flash over. He is in the west of England of you were ever looking for an alternative, no exactly local for you but useful if you were ever that way.

After seeing the stain of soot below my exhaust after the forced DPF regeneration the tuner did today I decided I would give the car a good long drive and try clean it out to see if there was any truth in what he was saying.

After work I drove 70miles out the motorway in 3rd gear at 120km/h so the car was reving at slightly above 4000rpm. I also turned on the heater and the back window heater to try get the car as hot as possible.

After driving for about half an hour in 3rd gear I turned around and said I'd drive my car home normally now and see if there's any change.

To my surprise there seemed to be a big difference in performance. The car seemed more responsive and there was a far stronger pull when I accelerated harder. Could not get over the difference! :)

There is still a bit of turbo lag which I was hoping the map would sort but considering how the car was driving immediately after the remap there is a vast difference. The forced DPF regeneration and my 70 mile drive today must of cleared alot of the soot.

As South_Bound also stated, driving in normally you would not really notice much of a difference but if you accelerate hard it definitely has far more of a pull and a kick off the turbo.

Considering completely removing the DPF now as my next mod as I'm shocked at the difference it made today

I drove the tdci Focus which used to be the courtesy car at Profile Automotive, this had a Wolf remap on it and I was surprised how smooth and sweet it felt to drive. If yours is anything similar it's no wonder you've broken out in a big :D now.

Haha I'm relieved most of all. Thought someone had tried con me out of almost €300 to have the same car perform the same that it already had. Seems to be great power of it now. My previous two cars were an Audi A3 2.0TDI 140bhp and a Passat with the same engine and power wise it feels on par with them.

Might unblank my EGR valve today and clean it out and possible get my DPF removed in the future after seeing the difference it made yesterday.

Thanks all for the help!

I got my 2.0 TDCi done and holy hell what a difference!

It has gone from 136 to about 190 horses. It's up from 320Nm to 450 or so now. Drive it sedately and it's lovely. No effort needed to get it moving etc. Start smashing the throttle and the car is a monster. Torque steer is certainly noticeable too.

I'll be getting the DPF removed at some point myself as well. The guys that did my remap actively encourage it for the health of the car. They told me that DPF's are being done away with at some point in the future too.

Think going to polybushes for the big wishbone bushes can help with torquesteer I was advised a while back.

450NM torque, jesus that must be fun to drive :)

When I'm paid in the new year I'm going to get my DPF removed as being at 104,000miles it's well past it's life expectancy of 75,000miles and although I unclogged it a bit the other day I feel it's inevitable really.

Removing the DPF would definitely help the turbo breath better aswell.

Kye do you have any turbo lag after getting your Focus remapped? The torque comes in quicked for me since the remap but there's still a small lag which I was hoping to get rid of
