Fuel Consumption Again

I like giving it a few beans and I'd be dead chuffed to get 45 instead of 35.

  • Mine's a Nov 2014 manual Tit and I get 33 although I do enjoy hitting the 'go' pedal. On cold mornings I let it run up to temp on the drive before I get in and disable stop/start.

  • Any car i have will be not that good on m.p.g how local i go. Eco boost would gain me a bit but not loads.

  • That 66MPG lark with the 1.0 EcoBoost... what a joke!!

It's weird you get so low, I've never had any issues even when it was new! Clearly driving like you stole it (within the law, ofc) is the key to good MPG ;)

Maybe if I reached the speed limit *ahem* at the same rate as others I might do better ;)

  • 2 weeks later...

So did the OP get his car sorted ? Was it the MAF or lambda sensors gone at all ?

I think the winter had an effect on me too, I was thinking I had a problem as the fuel prices dropped so dramatically and I was still putting the same or more fuel in a month! I checked the MPG and noticed it was at 32mpg... Normally closer to 38.

I've noticed that if I am heavier with my foot (Speed up quickly then maintain the speed limit / a little over the speed limit ;) it is much more fuel economic than slowly going through each gear and then staying at the speed limit for about 3 seconds before getting stuck behind some god-awful Peugeot driver doing 15mph.

I reset it mid-February though and it is up to 35/36mpg now! Hopefully over the slump now and I can actually make the most of the decrease in fuel prices before it creeps back up again.. Already noticed it has gone up by 5p in the last 2 months! Crafty people!

I get 30-32

As I mentioned before at winter went to 33-35 (usually 43)

But a guess the crap roads with ice and using AC more etc does make it go up can't wait till warmer weather comes in because I'm burning through it even tho it has heated a little so getting 37 atm but still needing heaters etc lol so won't go up till I stop using them as much

All engines are less efficient until they reach '' operating temperature ''.

Electrical demands such as heated screens, A.C. etc reduces fuel efficiency.

Cold ambient temperatures exacerbate the lower m.p.g.

I drive about 80 miles a day mixture of half mway and half a roads behind traffic pootling along at 50ish mph. Had the car 2 weeks. Just hit 1000 miles and averaging 49mpg. Calculated on fill ups. Fiesta red edition. Been running it sensibly. No full throttle and 4000 rpm max. Gave it a bit more on the way home today which brought the average down from 51 to 49. More than happy with that. My daily fuel bill has gome down from £13 in my diesel Smax to £8 in the fiesta. Long runs up to temperature definitely suit the engine. Also don't use the air con, this has a big impact on the fuel efficiency of small capacity engines.

Getting about 45mpg on mainly rural roads with two weeks usage. I'm quite happy with that as getting more than 10mpg more than the old focus 1.6.

A agree but my highest I've had was 61mpg going to England lol but for normal driving nope!

What ever happened to that "magic" £1 per/litre we were promised?

Yeah ano......could get to 99p! What a load ai gyte

I'm intrigued as to the different regulations on MPG results from America and the UK........ They seem to officially report figures that are much more realistic in America, as per this review:

Remember a US gallon is 3.8 litres approx, whereas we are 4.5 litres approx.

He says 49 mpg which is about 59 here. It is closer and I guess many have achieved this or close on it. I've had around 55mpg on a long journey in summer. In fact i haven't reset my mpg since then. That was back in sept. My average now reads 45. So on balance over 6 months I'm averaging 45.

Okay then that makes so much more sense! :D thanks.

If I do the supposed optimal speed for any car (56 mph) on the motorway I can get around 52-55. But who would want to do that for a 6 hour journey???

Hmmm strange a did from Motherwell Scotland to Blackpool and around that area and back on motorway at 70 cruise control (down and up) and was getting 55mpg down and 51mpg back up to Scotland ....on a full tank I only used 3/4 for full journey and that's at 70mph CC

Has anyone noticed an increase as they have run their car in? I've been on around 40mpg in the first 500 miles and hoping it will increase as the engine loosens up.

Yeah mine gradually increased from about 39 to 43-45. I'm at around 4000 miles now. If I do motorway driving it's way higher but I don't do much!

i have a zetec s 123psi, put 20 pound in it a week, average about 38-45 mpg normally get 160 miles range on 20 pound which is well better than my !Removed! 1.25 fezza!

Going on a road trip tomorrow to watch the MIghty Gills v Chesterfield. Now do i leave the trip showing 32.1 mpg and see how it improves or do i reset the trip and see what i get on a run up the motorway and back? it's a 390 mile round trip virtually all motorway as i live literally 1 mile from the M2.

I'd reset the trip

Well, Had my little road trip to Chesterfield but wish i hadn't bothered as we lost 3.0. As for the car, well as we were going to be early i kept her at 60ish mph cruising and at 50 through the numerous roadworks along the route and the trip read 57.4 mpg at Chesterfield. I didn't reset the computer and on the way back stuck to 70mph where poss and back home the figure had settled on 52.7mpg. I tested my trip computer with brim to brim filling and to be honest it was surprisingly accurate...This was done mostly using cruise control....To be honest i'm quite happy with that but i wish i could somehow improve the town figure of 32mpg which i'm getting at the moment. Perhaps see an improvement once the weather warms up.

Wondering if anyone has the new focus 1.5 150psi petrol ecoboost engine. I'm still running this in at 450 miles and the consumption is woeful at the min 32-33mpg. Know I'll prob never get near official figures (EU 61.4 C 51.4 U 40.4) but most of my 450miles to date has been a gentle cruise up an A road at 50-60 mph which can only be described as EXTRA URBAN (61.4mpg). Please could someone tell me if these figures will greatly improve as engine wears in?
