Fuel Consumption Again

Featured Replies

When I was doing similar I couldn't crack the same figures but the car was even newer at that stage and perhaps I just wasn't economical enough.

JRM are you rocking standard juice or something like vpower etc?

  • Mine's a Nov 2014 manual Tit and I get 33 although I do enjoy hitting the 'go' pedal. On cold mornings I let it run up to temp on the drive before I get in and disable stop/start.

  • Any car i have will be not that good on m.p.g how local i go. Eco boost would gain me a bit but not loads.

  • That 66MPG lark with the 1.0 EcoBoost... what a joke!!

That's impressive from that engine although I suppose the fiesta lightness in comparison to focus helps. Halfway through my vpower challenge on focus ZS 1.5 150bhp and am managing 36mpg half a tank to go mind. 655miles on clock so far.

I just tend to fill up where i can. Vary between sainsburys or morrisons bog standard or esso 95 ron unleaded. Both about 1.10 a litre round Cheltenham. Did fill up with esso yesterday. Not sure whether the esso fuel made a difference. Never been bothered with 98 ron stuff. Always found the extra mpg is negated by the extra price of the fuel.

Another road trip to the NEC in Birmingham, over 300 miles round trip. Steady 60mph on cruise where poss and 50mph in roadworks, occasional swift acceleration to overtake annoying lorries. Trip computer states 57.8 mpg using standard Texaco 95 unleaded. I have checked on 2 occasions with brim to brim filling so i know my computer is almost spot on in comparison.

Tank almost empty on the vpower and I managed 363miles at 36.2 mpg. (1.5 ecoboost petrol) not sure if the improvement is due to engine breaking in or vpower. Going to stick in regular unleaded 95ron 1st thing in morning & see how this goes. Very interesting to see if figure drops. Same weeks commute planned ahead so no change in driving style again.

Just got 56mpg for my first trip into work in the zetec s. Being limited to 50mph on the M3 would have helped that.

The ecoboost loooooves motorways.

Indeed. I'm more than happy with the economy. Came from a diesel doing high 60s. That was my only concern with getting the Fiesta, so no worries now.

Awesome little car though, amazing steering.

Yeah it handles like a go-kart it's great. The MPG isn't so good in town/country roads but on a motorway cruise it'll do 50+ easily. For the power you get it's great MPG!

Agreed hitting 33 to 37mpg the now as all town and country driving (motorways have road works on them lol) but the fun factor balances it out

After my motorway journey and clocking 57.8 mpg i was left with half a tank which has now been used by one more 40 mile motorway journey and the rest around town driving. Just filled up to brim and calculating to 51.7 overall mixed driving computer read exactly 50 mpg. Considering also that mine is a powershift that's great as i was hoping for mid 40's at least. I've had this car nearly 7 months now and must say the power when needed is superb and i can't understand why people mess about wanted more from them. My only gripe is that i'm not over impressed still with the auto box. It seems to have a mind of it's own sometimes especially from 2nd to 3rd when at times it's up to 4.5k revs before changing up, and on occasions dips in power and almost stalls when slowing down and pulling away again at junctions..

I've had my Fiesta for around 7 months too now and I've got the 1.0 Ecoboost. I do a lot of motorway driving, but also balance that out with a fair amount of town/city driving. I've not reset the average MPG for around 4-6 weeks and it's on 52mpg. I think that's pretty good!

Had the 1ltr 100bhp for 2 yrs aircon on all year round.. Was always around 38-40mpg used only v-power from 26miles to 7500miles (except first tank which got 32mpg) mainly town and back road driving. Did have a month of longer motorway trips that saw 45mpg. (Edit that's 38-40mpg average for the 7500miles I had the car for.. Individual tanks between 36-48from memory)

My brother has the same car normal cheap fuel and only gets around 30-31mpg. Pretty much same trips as mine. Was just 6months newer then mine. (He never resets trip)

My dad also has one and see low to mid 40's on cheap fuel, but does lots more motorway miles then me. But pretty equal in yearly mileage. Again 6months newer then mine.. Again never had the trip reset.

I Recently changed to the st and now getting 33mpg and improving with every trip, only just filled up with v-power after running the dealer supplied tank dry.

(Still under 500miles on the clock) so think that's pretty good, on par with my first tank in the 1ltr

In comparison I think the 1ltr should do much better then it did.. Oh another thing, I tend to leave mine in lower gears for longer then my both my dad and brother.. Really think the ecoboost bennifits from some revs, plus should bennifit from v-power it's the highest Ron rated fuel out there, as it's a turbo and double knock sensor'd, and is mapped to run on it, just turns itself down for cheap stuff..

Just remember it will most likely take more then one tank to see the increase.

Been to rolling road tests that proved 3-8% increases in bhp by using 102ron fuels, over 95rons

I'm still stuck on 35.4 :(

But I DO like the right foot ;)

+ mostly short/cold journeys.

EDIT: worth every penny ;)

Strange a few ppl a know have the 100ps version of the EcoBoost and getting 45-48mpg and on motorway getting 55mpg on cheap fuel

And in mines with cheap fuel on motorway a get 50-55mpg...and that's at 70mph with cruise control on ...

Only winter and cold weather ma cars mpg goes right down but in summer-autumn a wasnt getting any lower than 43mpg town driving lol

Yeah how many doing back road driving in mainly 2nd and 3rd? Lol

Plus when I traded it in the Eco rating said 85% of trips on a cold engine

Didn't think mine was that bad, my 2tdci was getting 26-28mpg most of the time in the end..originally Would return high 60's when oh the long runs loaded up, (tools etc) When I first got it. But have a van now for that hence down sized to the fiesta.

(Oh dad has never reset his mpg so he's around that figure over the 6k miles or so.)

I don't understand why people are getting 45 or below so much! When do you guys shift gears? Mine's always between 2000 and 2500 rpm (thats when the shift indicator normally lights up)...maybe thats why.

I also let the car roll on neutral when I need to slow down a lot (is this bad for the car in anyway?)

Some of it down to how you measure your mpg.. my figures are the combined figures for the whole of the 2yrs i owned the car.. if you reset it every time you fill up you get more accurate figure. i stopped login individual tanks a year ago. but when i was i found the trip to be pretty accurate.. yes at times on individual runs i could get 50mpg in the summer when heading out for a long run..that with a boot full of camping stuff normally too. most of my trips these days are under 10miles at a time.. in the winter the engine would just be at running temp then shut off.

Just amazes me how good the 1.6t in the st is compared to it same trips etc bigger engine, frightening how quickly the 1.6t warms up compared to the 1ltr.

As for coasting won't harm the engine, will wear brakes harder, (some volvos auto coast to save fuel) but it is illegal to coast.

But really its impossible to really compare one persons mpg to another, only way to find out is drive two different cars of same spec.

Oh my start stop wouldn't work in the winter either.. as a result of the short trips.. which i believe is where most of the higher mpg comes from on the smaller engine.

Ah ok , well I'm getting around 52 combined and I've not reset for around 4-6 weeks. I'll leave it for 6 months and see where I'm at. But also, thats the UK mpg, not USA - I think they're measured differently. Maybe thats why too! lol

Ford quote 66mpg for the EU market for the 1.0ltr regardless of engine power (the power shift version is 58mpg).. They quote a lower figure in the USA due to lower ron rating fuels, and the fact the US gallon is different to ours.

The st is quoted at 47mpg. but seems real world driving theres not as much of a difference, as the headline figures quote.

Oh and my combined to yours will be way different.. mine rarely saw the motorways in the winter, just summer when going to various race meetings..

Maybe should have said.. The figure quoted was the average for the 7500 miles in total. Individual tanks ranged from 37-48.

Which cars were used in those tests? I saw a video where they tested different fuels with a Golf GTI, and they did see some significant power increases so I definitely believe these turbo engines can benefit from higher ron. I only use V-Power in my ST too.

I also let the car roll on neutral when I need to slow down a lot (is this bad for the car in anyway?)

As Darren said it won't harm the car, but you have hardly any control when coasting which I think is why it's illegal. Also if you let the car slow down in gear you save a bit of fuel because the engine is being pushed along so doesn't need any fuel.

Just amazes me how good the 1.6t in the st is compared to it same trips etc bigger engine, frightening how quickly the 1.6t warms up compared to the 1ltr.

Yeah it still amazes me how fast it warms up, I've barely driven 3 minutes up the road and it's up to temperature lol.

Edit: I've averaged about 36 mpg for the last 10 months, worked out each time I fill up.

Back in the day I had heavily tuned rover.. The guys running turbos at time had a group session to remap the engines. Was the golf vid a 5th gear thing? Plus there's guy in America that retuned a fiesta st to run 100ron.. Americans don't have it on there's and saw 5bhp gains. Smoking tyres on YouTube.

You right about the lack of control from coasting, not just braking but putting car back in gear. The Volvo system was automatic so would re-engage when needed.

Hmm I'd be very happy with 36average tbh.. But I honestly thought there was something amiss with mine to start with.

Edit forget to mention the rover boys 3 of my mates had custom ecus with switchable maps for 95ron and 102ron race fuel.
