If you like your cars super smooth and shiny guys I've got a full by hand exterior detailing guide that I've written for others members. If your interested let me know and I'll pm it to who ever wants it. I can also adapt it for use with a rotary or duel action polisher if your confidant with using either. I'm a detailer with 12 years experience so just ask if you have any questions or need advice on detailing or paint correction.

Could I have a copy too please :). Also I'd like to know what's the best way to tackle swirl marks, which I think I've inflicted by using a brush and washleather.

I've substituted the washleather for a woolly mammoth drying towel, and just ordered a microfibre mit so that should help with future washes. And I've been using the 2 bucket method for a while, although washing with a brush probably defeated the purpose of that lol.

Many thanks StevenST13

White Spirit is cheap and quite effective at removing tar.

+ 1 ^^

Laumk7 I always clay a car from brand new cause you will be surprised how dirty a brand new car is. Then after that my routine is to do a full do every 3-6 months depending on weather conditions. When maintaining the finish I de-tar and use fall out remover once a month and re-wax. I always wash my car at least once a week to keep it nice.

You de-tar and use fallout remover once a month? How do you maintain any kind of sealant/wax layer. You're blowing it away every time surely! Plus surely that's uneccesary that often, fallout doesn't build up that fast!

You'll be very surprised how fast it builds up on a white car or any other colour. Tar and glue won't remove polish or sealants if used correctly. The fallout remover I use is ph neutral so that is also safe on wax and sealants. Most fallout is created from break dust so every time you use your car it's getting covered and from other cats on the road.

They may not remove it but they weaken it... If they can remove bonded iron and tar that's welded on they're hardly gonna have no effect at all on sealant/wax. I just do a de-tar/iron-x about every six months before it can do any lasting damage, and even then there isn't *that* much. Just seems excessive to me.

It's each to there own really. There is no right or wrong time scale it's on to personal preference. I prefer not to leave it that long as I know what can be done it the shortest time it's on there. I also have to correct a lot of paint defects on cars from what has been caused by it. I believe prevention is better than the cure I always top up wax and sealents once a month when I've done. If once every 6 months works for you keep at it but for me once a month works. I'm only giving advice on how I do it and others can work with what is best for them I will never say this is it and do it this way. I will state how I do it and advise then others can use that to do it there way that best suites them.

Thanks for the advice on tar remover guys. I bought some a couple of months ago that's like a spray on wax stuff but that doesn't seem very practical as it's something you're meant to do before washing. My fault for not reading the bottle first. Thanks again guys

I use a clay mitt with chemical guys luber. I like the mitt as I find it quicker than traditional clay and it can be safely re used if a dropped, even though I still wouldn't

Done some clay-barring today, after a wash n' dry... seems the weather was DRY (for a change). Such a beautiful mirror shine finish, I really can't get over how much contaminates are STILL on the paint work - even after a good wash.

I decided to give her a right going over! Frozen white is such a beautiful colour when clean, but my god those bleeding rust blobs (from the hot brake dust) is an absolute pain - they were everywhere!! With my trusted ClayBay and after some elbow grease, such a pleasing result!

Just to hijack this a little bit...

I finally got to properly clean the new car today. The previous owner must have had a blind fellow with a dirty rag wash it.. Swirls everywhere.

I bought a DA polisher when I had my previous car... Some Lake Country pads.. And after doing some reading I figured I'd try Meguiars Ultimate Compound.

So, jet wash, snow foam, jet wash, two bucket shampooing, claying done.. I tackled the swirls.

I didn't do badly. Lots of the deep ones are out - but there's still some persistent ones around the place.. And some weird light hologramming - is this a side effect of the Meguiars stuff? Can these be polished out with some Autoglym Super Resin Polish?

I've given up for today - I need to fix this hologram issue tomorrow and wax the thing :)

Any help would be appreciated.

To get the really deep ones out you would have to use a rotary polisher but I wouldn't recommend that if your not used to it as they can do more harm than good.

Holograms are a side affect with all types of machine polishing the root cause is mainly to high a speed, not keeping the pads flat to the panel and not breaking the cutting compound down enough when your polishing. These can be corrected fairly easy with a hologram remover compound and your DA. A good polish with super resin will help but won't really remove the holograming.

Ahh right. That would make sense. I fairly whizzed through doing this because I was going out last night. Ha.

I'll do a panel a week I think. Spend some time on each one. Waxing it properly afterwards.

Thanks.
