Advice On De-Tango Of St

Featured Replies

So I'm looking to put chrome bulbs in all round to replace the indicators. Originally was going to use Osram bulbs but the Philips equivalent seems to do a better job of removing the orange so I'm thinking I'll use those for the front and back: http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/581-PY21W-Philips-Silver-Vision-indicator-bulbs.html

For the side I can't find many branded chrome bulbs at all so I was going to have to use the only ones I could, these Osram ones: http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/501-WY5W-Diadem-Chrome-Bulbs-pair.html?bulb_search=car

I wanted to ask what bulbs you guys have used and what you think of them. Also would I be better going for LED bulbs for the side indicators or do the Osram ones do a decent enough job of covering up the orange?

I have the Osrams, including the wing mirror bulbs, and you're right they don't reduce the orange appearance as much as some others. However I'm quite happy with them because the bulbs themselves are less visible than some of the other chrome bulbs. You really have to know where to look to notice any indicator bulbs with these fitted, so they have quite a good stealthy appearance.

I bought these and they look brilliant. And I also have Philips front and rear. Barely any amber noticeable on them.

The Philips up front.

And before and after with the side indicator bulbs.

The pictures are exactly the look I'm going for so I'll get the Philips for the front and rear and the side bulbs off eBay.

Cheers for the advice guys

Nice one, I'm glad to help. It's crazy how much of a difference those ones at the side make though. They are probably one of the best price / aesthetic improvement mods I have done!

One more question, how hard was it to get the mirror glass in and out to change them? I really don't want to break the glass or the clips is all?

I do agree about them looking great though, my mate has them and they really make for a good change.

I didn't remove the mirror glass. The best thing you can do is tilt your mirror glass as far to the floor and inwards to the car as possible. Using a flat head screwdriver and a cloth just to cover the glass, you can lever the clips off without removing the glass. You shouldn't find the cover will go falling to the floor afterwards, but be careful just in case it does drop! Reattaching is dead easy. I think I did it all within about ten minutes and I'm far from a mechanic!

Ah that's great news, I was a little worried about taking the glass out and breaking it so I will use that method instead :)

Thanks again

I took the drivers wing mirror cover off last week. Just be gentle with the screwdriver, and push down on the clips. I think you only need to unclip 1 clip (nearest indicator bulb), then you can gently pull the cover off. Easy peasy! ;)

I had a look inside the mirror and saw that clip, I'd been hoping that would release the cover as it was easy to get at. Hopefully I will have as easy of a time getting it off as you did, bulbs should arrive by the end of the week so if all goes to plan they should be in pretty soon :D

I need to get some W5W bulbs. Then Shiesta Will be fully de-tango'ed!

Can I just check, that the bulbs on the side of the wing mirrors, are actually WY5W fitment - and not W5W?

Yes the Y is for Amber colour, if you search for chrome indicator bulbs like the above link you'll be fine.

So these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUDI-Quattro-80-91-Chrome-Silver-Indicator-Bulbs-SIDE-501-flash-Amber-orange-Rep-/300638142465?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item45ff6e0001

will be ok then... bonus with them being -32% cheaper. £2.02 for a pair!! ;)

Philips Silver Visions are the way to go, couldn't be happier with mine, aslo just need to do the de-tango of the side indicators then I'm all done with them.

The silver visions are what I have ordered in the end. They look pretty great in the photos, can't wait to get them fitted and hopefully the side ones I got from eBay turn up soon too

As of today, fully De-tango'ed :)
