Missfire/stutter When Accelerating At Low Revs

Hi all.

I have a 2003 1.4 Fusion 2. I'm experiencing a missfire/stutter from the engine when accelerating moderatly from RPM's below 2500. The engine will stutter a couple of times, sometimes with exhaust backfire and then clear, but it will always do the same thing when the revs are below 2500. It's been doing it for a short while and as of yet, there a no engine codes. It doesn't appear to do it after starting from cold and only seems to be when its warmed up, leading me to think that it may be running slightly weak when warmed up and that i may need to do something with the air mass sensor??!??

Has anyone out there worked on or experienced a problem along these lines that may be able to shed more light on the problem, before i fork out on an air mass sensor?

What tests can i do on the components of the air mass sensor using a multimeter to work out if the air mass sensor is the problem?

Looking forward to hearing your feedback
