Really? Are Ford's renowned for rusting!?

Certainly used to be. Pre-MOT welding was an annual ritual for me at one time. I remember my cousin buying a brand new Escort Mk 1 and the wings were rusted through in under 18 months.

I thought the problem was long gone until the Mk 1 Ka - have seen an entire rear three.quarter panel gone on those, and the one my Mrs had was killed off by rust in the end. I heard something about them using poor quality recycled steel on those, don't know if it's true.

My first Ford was a Mk1 Focus and since then I've only had Mk7 Fiestas so perhaps things have changed.

Let's hope so - though to be fair most makes were pretty bad in the 70's etc- and Alfa and Lancia in particular!

Surprising how many Mk 1 Focuses are around given the youngest is around 15 years old now, though ones I've seen seem to vary in condition -  I guess it depends how they're looked after. I know of a couple round here that were bought new when it first came out, and are still in great shape. Folk definitely seem to want to hang on to them.

I keep seeing on the Ford UK facebook page that the new diesel/ecoblue transits are plagued with drivetrain/engine issues...

Although Fords have had issues for a long time now, definitely since at least the early 2000's. I don't know if things seem to be getting better or worse though? I'd bet on better since automation has replaced a lot of manual processes/tasks, and a machine is more reliable than a human.

It is not the production that is the problem now. That was the problem in the 1970s: an unmotivated, don't care, workforce. Now the problem is design. Very, very poor design. Designers today need to know 100 times more than designers in the 70's, but in fact they actually know about 10 times less.

I remember visiting Dagenham along with other representatives of fleet users - this would be late 70's/early 80's. At one work station engine blocks were arriving at the same time as the set of  4 pistons/conrods, and the task of the guys was to put the pistons into the block and send them off to the next part of the process. At one point a block arrived with only 3 pistons. The guy just put them into the block and let it go on it's way. I mentioned this and asked if it would be rectified later "dunno mate, not my job, and don't f***ing care anyway" was the response.

Elsewhere a group were stood around smoking and chatting as the line had stopped upstream of their work station. Visiting factories (car and otherwise) only a few years later, when Japanese ideas like kanban had taken hold, you would see guys in a similar situation rushing back up the line to see if they could help clear the stoppage.

So things did change!

My own feeling is that the basic i/c engine has been developed to an impressive degree of efficiency and reliability, it's all the "stuff" to try and make it comply with emission regulations that were never dreamed of years ago that seem to cause a lot of issues, directly or indirectly.

Must be a nightmare for manufacturers at the moment with no clear phase out date for i/c engines, and wondering which technology to back. Politicians seem to favour battery electric which to me is beset by problems of its own - finite supply of rare materials for batteries, need to generate "clean" electricity, charging networks etc - while hydrogen seems to be virtually ignored, though I did see something about the Chinese favouring going in that direction.

My nice Magic tree for the car, it's the Diffuser one with a cork top that you hang on your mirror as never tried one before as it's got liquid in,well it's no more.

Well on mirror 1 day didn't like as i don't like stuff on mirror so stuck it onto the dash as only a small bottle in front of clock but so i could still see display,double-sided tape came off while driving went over and all over the plastic in front of the clock, magic tree took flying lessons out of window so £3.99 down the drain and a very scented car.

Well it's a good job you didn't park the Mk1 on damp grass...they do rust badly unfortunately, particularly around the sills.  I should add, I've always lived in close proximity to salty sea air so things do rust a bit quicker here than they might in more central areas.

Mk7 Fiestas don't seem to rust yet...but I'm happy to be proved wrong if so!  The MK3 Focus' will all be rusty soon, they're so badly built with rain leaking in all over the rear end even at 5 or 6 years old I dread to think what they'll look like at 15 years...

With the Ka’s, MK1 Focus and Mk4/5 Fiesta, they used awful fabric wheel arch liners which like Tom said earlier trap the dirt and damp against the metal sills and destroy them. Japan doesn’t salt it’s roads like us, so the underbody galvanisation either doesn’t exist or is very poor.

Lol, park a Ford on damp grass for a year and you come back to a pile or orange dust... :laugh:  Still, people used to rave about 306s not rusting, yet I scrapped many of them due to rust issues! :rolleyes:

I never understood why Jap cars rust so badly though...Japan isn't exactly a hot, dry country...and the rest of the cars are well designed and built (unlike Fords and Peugeots which are just designed to be cheap!).

All cars have rust somewhere though, German cars tend to rust out the wings where they fit sponge to reduce tyre noise...but all it does is trap mud, dirt and salt against the wing to rust it from the inside out...fantastic idea! :laugh:

I had wondered why every VW/Audi had rusted out front wings!!  I think I'd rather have road noise to be honest.

Oddly the wheel arches weren't that bad on our Mk4 Fiesta, the back ones went slightly but it was the sills and seat belt anchorages that caused 3 consecutive MOT failures and on the third one we called it a day.  If we had kept getting it welded then the only parts that would still be original by now would be the seats and the sunroof! :laughing:

Ah that's interesting, I didn't know they didn't salt the roads, I know some US states don't.

How do they get around in the ice as they definitely get a lot of ice and snow there! :unsure:

Yep, a lot of them are repaired under the paint & corrosion warranty when they're still fairly young.  Obviously as they get older it's not worth fixing privately though.

I do prefer the German refinement over other European stuff...but there must be a better way of doing it!

I have to say if I'd spent £20k on a brand new Passat and the wings started rusting after 4-5 years I would be mightily irritated.  That said, given all the other foibles the wings could be the least of its problems! :laughing:

Things I don't like... The fact that it's Monday after sleeping in a couple of hours time.

Also didn't like witnessing a pheasant get hit by a car doing approx. 40 MPH on the other side of the road. 😞

It was originally on my side of the road, and the elderly lady driving really slow in front in an old white Hyundai hatchback braked hard and swerved a bit to avoid it, only for the bird to continue running onto the other side and get hit.

Yeah that was a problem back then. My dad actually removed those sponges on his arches and bought a OEM wing. My car well the bottom of the front wings near the ground has rusted. Might put this black paint on to cover it and stop it.

I don't like reading today that the voice of Marvin the paranoid android from the Hitchhikers Guide radio and TV show has passed away (Saturday Oct 12th).
He also had various other TV roles including the father of Kevin the teenager from the Harry Enfield series and the father of Harmony in the kids TV series The Queen's Nose.

Need to treat the rust with somthing like hammerite rust stop first otherwise it will creep under the paint,

I don't like doctors as in our local GP making unrationl

(there may be a better term to describe but I've only had 4hrs sleep tonight)

over the top decisions which has put my wife up the walls as she suffers from anxiety,

Where do I start now;

Our son started playschool last month; we would have gotten it for free had we put him in last year but we kept him at home for an extra year because he is the youngest and wanted him to be 5 starting national school; so I'm paying €70 a week for him to attend this year where others are on the free,

Some whom know we well here will remember; when he was born he contracted pneumonia in his right lung; spent alot of time in hospital and we almost lost him; he then got MRSA while in a quarantine unit 🤷‍♂️ and was sent home that Christmas with MRSA and pneumonia in the left lung having cleared it from his right lung, and was on antibiotics which baby's dont be on unless its extremely necessary;

My wife's anxiety showed it's full power back then which was understandable and she wouldn't ever let him out of her arms for more than a nappy or change of clothes, it was the toughest time of both our lives and potentially his too.

Hes thankfully made a full recovery from both conditions and five years on hes a strong, fun, energetic healthy boy hes great crack;

Recently hes been starting to have a few toilet accidents at school where he forgets to go; which only happen in playschool, three times in the past two weeks; although when hes at home hes fine no accidents,

On the first occasion we asked him as always; in the nicest way possible; how did it happen or why did he think it happened; and his response was that they were all outside playing and the teacher had the door locked he couldn't get in to use the toilet,

This guy doesn't lye hes good as absolute gold, his sister lyes alot but this lad is 100%

Turns out there's two sets of French doors identical leading to two sides of the class room and the poor lad was trying to open the wrong set,

Anyway; twice since then hes had accidents and doesn't know why just happened, we didn't continue questioning as he instantly began to get disappointed with himself and it's not his fault hes a really good lad.

Wife took him to the doctor local GP to see if he had a kidney infection; thankfully all clear but yesterday she got a call from hospital to say the GP had referred our son for an emergency appointment for a full examination because they think he may be diabetic 😟

Doesn't make sense to me, and I understand there only taking precautions but they don't realise that its putting my wife back in to a children's ward where she had to sleep on a foam mattress in quarantine with our son and suffered a nervous breakdown five years ago; her anxiety hasn't been high in the past few years and now has to go back in to the fire bringing up old memories, smells and places aswell as seeing other people where we once were,

She wont let me take him myself; and says she is stronger now as is he; but I really dont want a relapse and I hate to think theres anything wrong with him atall,

Overall he is going to the best place as hs wouldn't be here without those really gifted people in the hospital and I thank them for that, just the GP should really study the wifes medical history before phoning to tell her he has made an emergency appointment;

The word emergency didn't need to be mentioned there atall considering she suffers anxiety.

Anyway rant over 😅

I'm going to try sleep now again, nervous about what's on the horizon for both of them meanwhile I'm working six days per week.

Suppose we think he have it tough until things get tougher.

@Lenny only assumption I could make with the doctors giving that suggestion to your son is the polyuria. Does he go toilet in the morning before school? Does he ask the teacher / know how to go himself to the school toilets?

There's more symptoms other than frequent urination to say someone has diabetes. Is type 1 diabetes inhereted in the family?

Do you know what tests they did when your wife took him?

He goes toilet before school and is his own person around the house goes without announcing, the teacher said they made it clear to the kids once they say there going it's fine,

The mother in law is diabetic and my grandad on my mothers side was but none of my brothers or sisters are, and I drink atleast two cans of monster energy per day so I'm clearly not 😅 yet anyway maybe tomorrow

Dont know the tests think it was just a urine test he sent off, dont think he took blood sample

You sure he doesn't hold himself back during school? I'd used to be a little nervous asking for the toilet in school that my body has gotten used to holding it for the whole day.

I'm just thinking if it might be normal to having sugar presence in urine at times. If your eating a lot of sugar and if that's what might of been the cause of concern.

My GP('s...I'm on number 4 now) don't even look at my own record before doing or saying anything so I wouldn't expect them to bother checking someone else's!!  I've had to send a clear & firm written letter confirming things I've already tried to explain several times over the last 4 years now...  I know I can't explain myself clearly in person but don't know how they're still failing to understand things written down! :unsure:

I keep worrying about diabetes and kidney problems myself, particularly this year as I seem to be having random periods of frequent, urgent urination that I can't explain.  GP isn't interested though, didn't even want to waste the money on a urine test when I asked about it.  Just told me it was probably anxiety...  Does your son get nervous at school and around in social situations at all?  That might explain why he's only having accidents at school rather than at home.  As Zain says, surely a sugary breakfast cereal would cause sugar in a urine test anyway.  Hopefully he's alright and it's nothing to worry about in the end. :smile:

Afaik glucose shouldn't spill over into urine in any significant quantity unless there is some element of hyperglycaemia going on. "Sugar puff" smelling urine is a giveaway.

Glucose can be present normally in urine but it shouldn't be over a certain amount. I'd think lennys son would have a serological test done to check his blood sugar or ask about any possible symptoms of diabetes. And I'm sitting here in uni brain dead on a 3 hour break 😩
