I don't like that Nicola has taken a big part of why I enjoy going away, away from me this October.

We were meant to be going to Spain in October but, obviously, all got cancelled, so thought we would go down to Inverness for a couple of days instead. We don't go out much when we're home so going out for a meal and a drink (or two) is a big part of our trip away.

For those of you unfortunate enough NOT to live in Scotland 😉 our First Minister has decided that from Friday for 2 weeks, pubs can only open from 6am to 6pm BUT can't sell alcohol unless you can consume it outside!!! EDIT: in which case, you can drink until 10pm! 🤷 Mmm, eating food and drinking beer in a beer garden in Scotland in October 🌧️⛈️🌬️

I foresee a return to the speakeasy. It's like the 1920s all over again: a global pandemic, followed swiftly by a depression and prohibition. Fortunately the modern world moves at a faster pace, so it's only taken 6 months to get there this time around rather than 2 years 🙂

According to various leaks reported in the media today, looks like North of England could get all pubs/restaurants closed from Monday. So we might have to trek up North  for a drink at any  time. How are the midgies at the moment?😃

My Fiesta as it's going in for a service and have lots of faults looked at and with a overheating engine and battery faults. It's only done 12000 miles in 18 months and my 2008 Focus I sold two weeks ago with 110000 miles had never had anything done to it apart from routine servicing.

I don't like buying kitchen cleaner for the bathroom...only just noticed as I opened it.  Why do they put them in such similar packaging? :laugh:

Last week the council finished resurfacing one of the main roads through our village. Top notch job too, totally reconstructed, not the usual surface dressing bodge, all grates, etc properly levelled, new surface really smooth and quiet to drive on.

So, what's not to like? Well, this morning the water company started digging it up....!😠

It's sods law that not long after (or sometimes during) reconstruction/full resurfacing of a road, they'll be burst water mains or other leaks. The vibrations etc. from the resurfacing works often is enough to cause rotten water main's that have been sat in the ground for ages to break.

The main A road that I currently live on was fully resurfaced in September but now has a visible water leak about 200 meters up the road from the house. Even before the resurfacing started, there was another leak on the water main 100 meters in the other direction from the house. This was still in progress for the first week of the resurfacing so the works started from the opposite end and worked back.

Another main A road in Ashford had a gas leak during the resurfacing works so that was slightly more awkward. Other than mass mains replacement works by the utilities (mainly gas and water), there is always a good chance that leaks will occur not long after resurfacing starts.

Yes, I think that's what had happened. I managed to get a look in the hole after they packed up for the night and saw a length of very rusty looking pipe that had been cut out.

Had that sort of thing recently in my area.
Road resurfaced and not long after I smelled gas every time I walked past a certain spot, reported it and they drilled & tested but found nothing.
I kept smelling gas and kept reporting it, tested twice more with no results.
Finally 6 months later I went out one morning to find road dug up and gas pipe repairs being carried out exactly where I reported it and where they tested 3 times.
Amazing that they drilled down and used gas sniffers but found nothing multiple times & my nose picked it up without fail.

Speaking of DIY;

I don't like the job I'm currently doing at home; I'm running two Cat7 network cables from the living room through to the kitchen,

Here is the rear of my cabinet inside the living room where all network, satellite and terrestrial services are distributed, A.K.A where all the magic happens

20180923_102713.jpg.c0d9b2189a6210744ac66a72fcce121f.thumb.jpg.4a78b5fcf92a388b4d10df309d230de4.jpg

Below is the existing clipsal plate which I've fitted in the living room; it feeds three rooms upstairs,

IMG_20200917_174522.thumb.jpg.9fe28ef050a851eba009f0b7cc530610.jpg

Has female sockets in the rear as well as the face to take pre-terminated cables.

IMG_20200917_174534.thumb.jpg.b30b4a8c72b193bec9a156cb58d8e3da.jpg

I'll be replacing this with a five port clipsal face plate currently on order from electricalwholesaler.ie

E35WE.png.d47474c91b0b4f2ccebfc493ee287c8d.png

I've gotten the loan of an SDS drill from the maintenance department in work and  drilled a 12mm hole through from the rear of the existing network socket plate in the living room, I don't do enough DIY to own an SDS drill I just have an ordinary think there called HSS,

Anyway;

IMG_20200917_174527.thumb.jpg.202102225898b75f2a17a00cd637f144.jpg

IMG_20200917_174507.thumb.jpg.eeccf1a5d433de8f474ddf4f11d78be3.jpg

Here we are now inside the kitchen and it looks like a gun shot in the wall 😅

IMG_20200917_174613.thumb.jpg.7c5fdaa970b1586946c7b5652efb1888.jpg

The wall is concrete block with 1.5" insulated plasterboard on both sides, which makes the job slightly easier when bringing the cables from the hole to the floor I can cut the wall using a fresh Stanley blade as it's only plasterboard with foam inside,

IMG-20200920-WA0000.thumb.jpg.5b5dd677769d1dd5b827e5756207a306.jpg

The hardest job is then to use a hammer and chisel; to chip away the plaster along the bottom of the neighbouring wall behind where the skirting board would be; along underneath the radiator to a double socket close to the back door,

IMG_20200917_174624.thumb.jpg.a59864571558b98f9fced91c774a55a6.jpg

I've then to take off that double socket and raise it up another foot higher on the wall fitting a double + single wall plate which is also currently on order from electrical wholesalers

20190609_232207.thumb.jpg.85dafd07166eca1f6f2f27b2d7cdbc91.jpg.1f060a63f247e45b54d7c5b083bf4303.jpg

To then house the double socket and a twin plate containing two RJ45 sockets.

273846400__1.JPG.thumb.jpg.704f4cb8384c2e304ddec4d2b83e77c9.jpg

I'm currently waiting on the Keystone RJ45 socket inserts designed to fit in to the Schneider Electric clipsal classic wall plate; waiting for the inserts to arrive from Australia, purchased through eBay,

Clipsal are manufactured by Schneider Electric whom are an Australian company, and although they provide a uk range of 240-250v sockets and switches; there auxiliary inserts are not freely available around here although they fit directly in to the UK wall plates, so I'm currently waiting for there arrival; here's a picture of one previously purchased along side a HDMI variant.

20180218_164308.thumb.jpg.c69955919ecf2fdad9659b642dd70d67.jpg.6f306d89a4dcadb4bb48600d90935043.jpg

The next step then is to purchase a length of kitchen counter worktop from IKEA along with some brackets and a stainless steel leg for the front left corner of the top slightly above the height of the radiator there but not spanning across as far as the radiator; the top will come across from the right corner to around the same point as the dogs tail there

IMG-20200920-WA0001.thumb.jpg.0e7f9ce6053ac8b4a5e22f1e0133e6a3.jpg

I'll fit it to this corner with the new socket position being situated closely under the countertop;

The plan then is to have an all-in-one network printer/scanner fitted on this countertop in the corner of the kitchen plugged in to the network which will increase desk space upstairs where the unit is temporarily in operation.

IMG-20200920-WA0005.thumb.jpg.2894d4930e8f376b5eb3af143f118c55.jpg

I used to outsource all printing and scanning to our local library but since covid19 I've decided to become more self sufficient.

Getting back to the main point again then; I don't like having to chase out the walls followed by filling and sanding,

On 9/20/2020 at 7:37 PM, BigLen said:

Plasterboard is very hard on Stanley blades, took two blades to cut out this section of plasterboard,

Scouring over and over like breaking out of Alcatraz

IMG-20200920-WA0010.thumb.jpg.e9e4d9f20f3100f1ad000f12793e3d9c.jpg

I fitted masking tape over the plaster to help reduce egg shell cracking when cutting in with a Stanley blade.

IMG-20200920-WA0012.thumb.jpg.d8bfe7ab5684f103fa252b8d913c9ebd.jpg

All cut through now;

IMG-20200920-WA0014.thumb.jpg.946abb351d46a9f6758f15cb2e858ea1.jpg

Peeled off the masking tape,

IMG-20200920-WA0008.thumb.jpg.d24140287656d56bbfed3e3ea88367ae.jpg

Caught the inside paper layer of the plaster board and pulled which took out the centre pieces revealing the insulation,

IMG-20200920-WA0007.thumb.jpg.729f508771f74298002cf25e3bbb510f.jpg

I then cut out the insulation using a kitchen knife as the Stanley blade wasn't long enough.

IMG-20200920-WA0018.thumb.jpg.9ba4c40912fc39182c91442eb793564c.jpg

Now stripped out to the original block wall and chased out along the floor,

My neighbor's stayed at home today so I decided to leave the hammer and chisel until tomorrow when it's officially a work day.

I'll add all this information in to one single post on my living room project thread when it's finally completed in the coming weeks.

I'll be filling the holes with fire rated expanding foam then trim it back by a few millimetres for filling sanding and painting.

The majority of the cable will be just covered by expanding foam as it will be behind the skirting board or kick board as some may call it,

Next stage of progress will be in a few weeks posting on the thread below as it will then be something which I do like.

I haven't completed this job yet as I'm still waiting for some RJ45 sockets to arrive from Australia to fit inside the clipsal wall plate;

Last night I received an email notification to say they have arrived in there destination country 🙂 and my next door neighbor's have breached the current lockdown rules; been away somewhere since friday; which gave me a great opportunity to hammer away today without disturbing anyone.

IMG-20201011-WA0001.thumb.jpg.1170a997553479c6d4b11b1b5e663c60.jpg

I first measured up 95cm from the ground to mark the top of the new socket location as the new corner worktop will be 100cm

Which leaves 5cm gap in height above the socket to allow for some voltage adapter plugs to be used if ever required.

IMG-20201011-WA0002.thumb.jpg.bcf125250b9ddb9a9db2b4d1a1ffe015.jpg

Started off with a hammer and an old flat headed screwdriver to gently chip away along the pencil markings to avoid taking away huge lumps of plaster; which would have been the result had I gone straight in with the lump hammer and chisel.

IMG-20201011-WA0003.thumb.jpg.128be5d8a8fc11df4fb09b84581950eb.jpg

Once I had the plaster chipped down to the concrete blocks; and you will know this by the sound when hit, it's alot louder when hitting block compared to plaster,

I then moved on to the lump hammer and chisel,

IMG-20201011-WA0004.thumb.jpg.43d0e634755f433e27c78aa5d5956ef8.jpg

Chipped away the plaster to reveal the concrete block beneath;

IMG-20201011-WA0006.thumb.jpg.984ddc5deae00a83aa9f7c983403b4e6.jpg

Checked the 25mm first fix wall insert for size to be sure I had the opening the correct size prior to chipping away at the concrete block,

IMG-20201011-WA0008.thumb.jpg.8adf7f7c1be80795dc31ec3bf33cf90c.jpg

The white PVC conduit feeds from the downstairs ceiling; down the wall to the socket; fed from the main switch board,

I did switch off the power before commencing any work atall;

I then used the flat head screwdriver and hammer to cut open the PVC conduit taking away millimetres at a time to cut it out both top and bottom,

IMG-20201011-WA0009.thumb.jpg.00d29f21d9fd45ffbd71766813ee68e8.jpg

I then cut the free section of PVC conduit out using a snips; and gently pulled the cable up from the original socket below,

IMG-20201011-WA0012.thumb.jpg.dfef91d21cac1e2a63cf37c9dcccf90e.jpg

Another thirty minutes of hammer and chisel made enough space for the new 25mm socket plate to fit in place; followed by two 5mm screw & wall plug to secure.

IMG-20201011-WA0014.thumb.jpg.82d83e52cfa43e61147b4a5544bf76ea.jpg

I then marked out the lines which have to be chased out next to feed the two RJ45 cables from the living room wall up to the new socket on the wall; however I haven't chased it out yet as I'm going to wait for the RJ45 sockets to arrive in to my home then chase & fit the cables the same day to insure our dog doesn't chew the ends.

IMG-20201011-WA0021.thumb.jpg.0f15ea0a1dcf9af6df5fbc561a19fedb.jpg

I cut the excess electrical cable and wired in the socket; I'm awaiting delivery of another Schneider Electric clipsal classic double socket to fit in the original location with the power cable to it; being daisy chained down from the socket above.

IMG-20201011-WA0022.thumb.jpg.411ce1de053c6d937ef11f5aac2f64e1.jpg

Further progress next weekend when hopefully I should have the RJ45 inserts; in my hands.

Will be worth all the effort when it's finished, alot of filling and sanding to go after installation.

I don't like being fined for driving in a chargeable area...by the Home Office... :rolleyes:  It does look pretty genuine though, I reckon a lot of people will be caught out by it!

I don't seem to see a scam email for months, than get a glut all at once. Some of them are so rubbish they wouldn't fool anyone, but some are getting very sophisticated and cleverly targeted. E.g. I've seen several about over 75 TV licence (still too young for that, lol) and various COVID 19 related support schemes which are very authentic looking and apparently from the relevant department.

Some years back there were waves of snail mails which mainly originated in Nigeria iirc and basically said if you gave them your bank details they would deposit shedloads of cash in your account and pay you handsomely for the favour. Thought that had died out with the rise of the internet, but a pal of mine has had several of those lately.

As ever.......

I remember, I kind of miss the days of "I am Nigerian royalty" and then the tables turned on the scammers.

That's the one. I think the name came from the relevant section of the Nigerian Criminal Code.

I don't like that Sony has seemingly ruined the PS4 with the 8.0 update.
Friends list gone walkies and you can't create a party chat the same way anymore. You now have to create a group message, add players and then invite them to the party chat through that message group. You also cannot set a chat to private.
Also, it seems Sony have decided to record party chats now so they can moderate users and take actions on player accounts if anything happens (racism etc).

That's clever and love that the police approve it 😂. Should try something like that on my car. Been told another person on my road had their belongings taken from their car. I'm double locking my car and removed the satnav I have in the glovebox so they don't steal anything expensive.

I just feel like staying awake at night hiding outside and smash them in if I see one of them going around looking at peoples cars

I checked the levels on my car this evening as it was serviced by a Ford main dealer on Monday and the oil is as black as the ace of spades and smells burnt so oil hasn't been changed.
