Steering On Zetec S

Featured Replies

Hi there,

We have started to notice a noise on the steering on our 2011 Zetec S as of the last week. It can be heard at standstill if you turn the steering slightly and sounds 'notchy'. When driving, it can be heard slightly as well especially on more uneven surfaces.

Has anyone else encountered this and if so, any ideas on how to resolve it? When we took it to the local garage who look after the car for us (not a Ford Specialist, but good friends) they did not know what it was, but admitted they could hear it.

Thanks,

John

Is it like a knocking? My fiesta had a slight knocking sound when turnkng the steering wheel that you could notice at a stand still, it wasnd actually a problem or anything, ford picked up on it when i had it in for a brake change in december, just said the joint at the bottom of the steering collum dries after a while, fresh grease corrected it, but the knocking is purely just a nois, nothong major at all and only cost £20 to re grease

Yes it is at times yes. If I am sitting with the car parked up and turn the steering only slightly from side to side, I can hear it and feel it. When I looked on other forums, I saw that other people had a similar problem and in some cases, they had obtained a new steering rack - for not real reason it appeared. Others said it was a £5 pin that had failed and could be replaced easily, but when I took it to the garage, they were going to charge me a lot of money to have a look - a licence to print money almost even though we know them, so I thought I would ask.

So I might as well give this a go.

Thanks for your help.

John

Hi there - thank you for sending through the link. I will have a go at this in the week.

Many thanks again.

video gives some idea of the issue, but i will say theres no need to to remove the shaft completely, all you need to do is remove the bottom uj bolt 12mm, and grab shaft slide up to detach, then slide down as far as it will go,then apply grease to the shaft where it slides up outer shaft, then work it up and down a few times.

then refit, you should use a new bolt and torqued up correctly
