Mountune St & Zetec S Question

CREED

Recommended Posts

I wanted to ask both ST MP215 and MP(whatever the Zetec S 1.0 is) owners about the part numbers on there air boxes. I'm thinking that I could get the induction kit meant for the 1.0, minus the hose, and fit it to my ST so I wanted to know if the two air boxes are actually the same.

Why? Well I want to do this upgrade in stages basically and I prefer to do stuff myself so rather than handing over £600+ to get the hardware and the remap I am just getting the hardware for now. I can get the VAT off the kit so it should cost around £180. I know it wont benefit performance but it should sound nicer and I might be able to haggle with mountune later about price if I just need the remap in the future.

I know it sounds crazy but it might just work... humour me :P

Here are edited versions of the images of the kit showing just the bits I'm after for comparison:

The air boxes are the same, I doubt Mountune will sell you the 215 map on its own though.

If you want to DIY save up and get the MT215 or any induction kit and a plug in remap.

Do you know about the part numbers, even if they're the same if they have different part numbers then it can cause warranty issues etc. is all. I could always get the mTune mapper at a later date

I don't remember seeing a part number on the box itself.

It will effect the warranty anyway as you haven't bought the complete kit from them, they also don't appear to sell the Mtune and 215 map on its own anymore, when they did it was £450.

Both kits claim they don't effect the base warranty as long as you only use either Mountune or OEM parts, which I would be. Regardless of if I use the whole kit or part of it is shouldn't matter, the only sticking point is if they have given it a different part number. Obviously in that case they could claim that the part I had used was not suitable for use on an ST.

The air box is not part of the mp135 kit for the 1.0l, it is part of the MP215 kit which is why they only sell it with the map in either MP or MT form. There is even some confusion regarding the warranty if you fit the MT215 yourself using the mtune.

If they happy to sell these parts like you want to do, they would have that option.

Email them or even better phone them.

It seems that the reason they don't sell the parts separately is more to do with money than compatibility. Its a better margin for them if the option is either take it to them to have it fitted or buy a kit full kit costing almost the same. As for the airbox, there is one as part of the induction kit for the 1.0 but the question is, is it the same. The warranty is always something they try to wriggle out of which is why there is no clear info of coverage when using mTune but, again, if the part numbers are the same then it makes no difference what kit them come from.

I plan to email them in the next few days.

Its also worth noting that Mountune in the US offer these two kits for the ST:

http://www.mountuneusa.com/mountune-Induction-Upgrade-Kit-Fiesta-ST-2014-p/2364-cais-aa.htm

http://www.mountuneusa.com/mountune-Full-Induction-Upgrade-Kit-Fiesta-ST-p/2364-int-blk.htm

The second of which appears to be exactly the same as the Zetec S kit sold here in the UK, this again would seem to suggest that not only are the parts the same but they can be installed without affecting your warranty.

I have the 1.0 mountune induction. I'm sure it's the same. Paramanic has an ST one on his 1.0.

I'm almost certain it must be exactly the same, I can just imagine them sneaking a small part number variation in there just to catch people out though.

It's also worth noting that the warranty is different for US and UK fords, more parts are warranty friendly in the US via fordracing.

Mountune spent a lot of time, money and effort getting the 215 kit warranty approved by ford UK, part of that would have been that it's sold together. In the US they have only just got warranty approval on the MP215, they started selling induction kit as Mountuneusa can custom map the cars with a cobb accessport ( what a Mtune is based on). US cars are mapped differently too.

Even without vat the induction kit ?(£207)and Mtune (£374)would cost similar to the MP215, £599 + fitting ( from £0-£100)

Yeh fair point about the UK - US differences it wasn't he best comparison. The pricing would be close I know, seems like getting Mountune to fit the proper kit is themselves is the only option really as far as warranty is concerned

Okay so Mountune has got back to me with the reply attached below. They are towing the line and claiming that the part is different which is sad as it means no warranty :( . I did expect them to say that though, I wish they would sell the induction kit on its own in the UK. Weighing up what to do now really...

Hmmm a somehow don't believe that because in that case they are allowing more air in so needs calibration .....why do other induction kits not need calibration?

A really think they are the same a think they just marketing it with the mtune kit so get more money ......

Of course it doesn't need calibration, the car won't overfuel anyway, it's what modern ECU's are for, it's just them covering themselves is all.

Most likely it is the same, all you need is a tape measure to check it, same diameter and volume = Voila the same.

Mtune kit is a huge cost tbh, I'd rather buy a Revo kit and ITG Filter for near enough the same, if anything happens anyway you can always map it back to standard via the handset and change the air filter and the dealer will be none the wiser.

Plus given how much abuse the cars must be getting fault posts for them are very very rare don't you think? I think the engine at least is built well enough to not worry about what a slight AFR change and filter is going to do, next to nothing, wouldn't worry about it.

Yeh there is no way the air box change would require calibration as, like you guys said, the ECU monitors MAF etc. I definitely wouldn't invest in mTune, its just too much money for what it is.

What putting me off is the idea of buying the 1.0 kit running it for a year or so then wanting the 215 remap and Mountune telling me that I have to have the proper kit. I can imagine them being reluctant to sell me just the remap, don't suppose anyone has had that done?

They've no said anything wrong in that reply.

The 1.0l induction kit is,differnt as the intake hose isn't the same as the ST version. Although you can buy the box on its own.

Induction kits can lead to issues with the MAF this has been seen with both autospecialists kits and the GGR kit. On standard and stage 1 cars. As usual with Mountune the calibrate the map to work with a known set of components, which is why revo for example give a wide range on they quoted power figures.

If you don't want the Mountune map why do you want their box? Plenty of other maps out there which may offer more BHP for less £ but, they don't keep the warranty.

If your only after more noise then there are many induction kits available, the most recommended being the ITG.

Mountune boxes are on eBay

There wouldn't be that's why they're happy to sell it as a seperate part for your car, and for it to be warranty friendly.

Just to be clear, the reason I want to use Mountune stuff is to improve the sound of the car and not void the warranty and that's pretty much it. As such every other induction kit is not an option. That's why I wanted to find out if the kits they sold were the same for both cars. I think it is naive to assume that the only reason they don't offer the kit alone to ST owners is because it isn't compatible, they could choose to do so for financial reasons.

Unfortunately the boxes on eBay wouldn't maintain the warranty as it doesn't apply for second hand parts.

Takes 10 mins to swap over if you have an issue that you think may result in a warranty claim.

You say you want to keep warranty but are trying to buy the kit in 2 parts over a period of time. Which as you've found out they won't do, buy it in one go or not at all, your first post said you can claim the vat back, why not do that with the whole kit?

Mountune and ford have tested it and for whatever reason they won't sell it on its own. If they thought it was ok then ey would sell it in the manner you're trying to.

The ability to remove the kit could be used to justify almost any mod and isn't really the point. If nothing else it was an interesting thought and it seems I'm not the only person to have considered this option. As it turns out from a warranty stand point this idea is a no go but it was worth asking, the part number could've easily been the same.

From a warranty point of view it was a no go from the start, ford issue the warranty they know that for the ST is only available as part of the 215 kit, therefore if you haven't got all the kit you haven't got the warranty either.

Just wait till you can afford all of it or don't bother at all.

And removing the part is part of the point, most people will add a mod and remove it when taking it into a dealer for warranty issues, they'll even remove the map, I've even seen people say they will take the decat off before it goes in and that's not a quick job.

You could buy the 1.0l airbox or a used ST box ( I still think they're the same, they don't have a part number on them) fit it, enjoy the noise and any benefit the box brings, then if you have an engine related issue, swap it over.

You've done well getting a all that for that price. I have been keeping an eye on my local breakers yard but haven't spotted any ST in there at all. Breaks my heart to see an ST so destroyed like that but at least some good can come from it getting some cheap parts :)
