Fiesta St - 1St To 2Nd Gear Change

Featured Replies

I'm a new driver so this is probably just me being a bit crap, but when I change into 2nd gear without thinking about what I'm doing I keep getting a bit of a jerk forward. Every other gear change is fine.

If I think about it and slip the clutch really slowly it's smoother but It feels like I'm on the clutch too long and it does extend the time I'm taking to gear change, which doesn't feel that natural. Alternatively I've changed into second sooner and that seems to be ok although it does feel like I'm changing too soon compared to other cars I've driven.

Is there a knack to it or is it just my lack of experience?!

I have to be careful too in the ST and I've been driving years.

Mine's quite "clicky" when changing from first to second. Apparently it's something to do with the dual mass flywheel. *shrugs*

Lack of experience coupled with the lack of 1st gear really...

All cars will have different gear ratios and feel different in/between gears... With the ST 1st gear is virtually non existent - try and change up as soon as you feel possible - usually a shade under 2k revs is alright but any further up the Rev range you'll feel a definite lurch when changing up!

Just pull away slowly and try changing up early and it should feel a lot more smooth! Hope that helps

faster clutch dumping required.

faster clutch dumping required.

Does that mean pretty much taking your foot off the clutch without giving it any resistance ?

Yep, Gear in ,throttle down to the floor and almost knee yourself in the face by dumping the pedal, fast changes work well on this car.

Can't say I've ever noticed this problem in my ST Every gear change is fine on mine. First gear is pretty much non existent when you floor it but that's it really.

Must admit when I do this I like to exaggerate the knee movements if other people in the car, makes them question their decision of letting me drive them anyway :')

No problem with mine either. 1st does run out of steam very quickly so I go to 2nd then 4th then 6th.
