Ffoxy
I'd ask him why he didn't just change the battery.... Be suspicious. He may have had the ECU codes read and decided to unload the car to save expense, I'd either walk away as there's lots to choose from, or negotiate £500 or so off! Ffoxy
I bet it'd come back on at some point as well! My daughters fella bought a Seat Cupra with the EML on, the owner said it was the O2 sensor, I advised him to walk away but he bought it. After changing 1 of the 2 O2 sensors the EML went off, but came on again after. So he had the other O2 sensor changed and after that the ECU showed a failing turbo.... Your choice obviously but I know what I'd do unless the car was silly cheap, full history, genuine low miles and in mint condition. Just my opinion.
