Is Lighter Socket Supposed To Be Always On?

Featured Replies

Hey,

As I am installing a dash cam at present, I thought id check to see if my lighter socket goes off after a while, but they don't, is this normal ? (front and rear)

is a mk2.5 zetec

if that's correct, then is there anyway of getting it to turn off when ignition goes off? don't really see the point of having it permanently switched on

If you want a cig lighter that comes on or off with ignition I can make one for you. It will give you a socket you can tuck under the dash or wherever suits your needs. Everything from fusetap to so

  • See my guide here fitting dual camera system fed through a piggy back fuse adaptor in to fuse F100 Comes on and off with ignition, No splicing easily removed. Link: http://www.fordownersclub.com/f

  • Or if nothing else shares the cig lighter fuse, remove the fuse and then remove the other end of the wire from the cig lighter and tape it up with insulation tape and tuck it away. Now, fit your fuse

yes you will need to find a fuse in the box and use a piggy back

so it is possible then ? not sure what you mean though! (im a noob)

Fuses 127, 129,132 in the footwell board are likely candidates.

Fit one of these so you have a tidier wiring layout-

Red wire to the fusetap wire and black to any body mounted screw or bolt for earth.

With the fusetap you need to make sure that side with the wire coming off it is on the negative terminal of the fuse panel or else the fuse will be bypassed and offer no protection to the circuit.

On your fuseboard the negative terminal should be the forward facing one of the terminal pair but to be sure when you fit the fusetap/cabling leave the top fuse out when initially installing everything and then plug the usb cable into the camera and turn on the ignition to I, if the camera powers up then reverse the fusetap and test again.

If the camera doesn't power up the tap is the right way round, insert the fuse and check everything works as it should.

I don't want to be hardwiring the camera in, I want to be able to remove all wiring easily again, also I don't want to be cutting wires if possible

thanks for your help all

No wire cutting is necessary at all.

The power cable is easy to tuck up behind the A pillar trim in 5 minutes so the cable pops out wherever you want around the windscreen.

All wiring will be removeable in no more than 10 minutes.

Ive read your posts a few times Stoney regarding "the negative side" and have always been a bit confused as there is no actual negative terminal only a permanent live feed terminal and then the non live terminal until the fuse is in place which then becomes live too. Just thought would mention it incase anyone else thought the same. Your explanation of how to test which is the "non live" helps clear it up though.

thanks stoney, I guess there will be a guide somewhere for this ? i need something easy to follow , step by step lol

Why not just pull the camera power adaptor out of the 12v outlet then when not using the camera if you dont want it all wired in properly?

Because I do not want to be doing that every day, id like it to go off when I switch the engine off and on again when I switch the engine on, but thanks for your comment

much better hidden but hey it up to you :)

Piggy back fuse to the camera it is then or rewiring your 12v outlet to a switched supply or even an in-line switch to isolate the outlet. Plenty of options available but i will go for how Stoney described when i get round to buying a camera.:)

it will be hidden :) all that wont be hidden is the camera and sat nav dock

it going down the a-pillar into the dash and back out at the back 12v outlet and plugging all in there :)

cheers WES

so I get what stoney linked to, and follow what he says

right ok good luck with the insulation :)

I would so its done properly. Like he already said you can take it all back out in minutes and no factory wires are cut/spliced. :)

forgot about that one last year sometime rear fog lights only live in start and run if done from the fuse box

Thanks Lenny, I have a question on your guide...

Where did you install the front camera? u have the rear done, but I cant see the front camera, surely its not in the glove box as it wouldn't get anything lol

think I understand it now, all I have to do is buy the fuse tap lead from link above, Find FUSE 100 in the passenger foot wells glove box, remove that fuse and put it into the fuse tap lead into the bottom one and the new fuse (what rating?) into the top and put the fuse tap back into F100 and that's it, nothing else?

Dont forget what Stoney said, DO NOT put the camera fuse in and see if the camera comes on without the fuse. If it does come on then turn the fuse tap around so it is not bypassing the fuse and giving no protection. If it doesnt come on then you have it the right way so just pop your camera fuse in. Go for the lowest rating fuse first (5 amp) and see how that goes.
