Michael9
A towbar mounted bike thing, I was going to say trailer but it's not I think a focus hatchback is to small for this or would it be ok. Also this bike in the photo would about the size of the one to be carried.
MONDEO TXS 2.2
A lot depends on the engine in the Focus & the weight of the bike + carrier
stef123
the nose weight of most towbars is only 50-75Kg. Engine wise wouldn't be a problem.
MONDEO TXS 2.2
Could be the final nail in the coffin of a DW6TED4 . . . :(
Michael9
Sorry I should have said...a mk1 1.8 tdci i don't know the weight of the bike but it would in the region of 140-60k if there is a sticker on the car it will probably only say what the towing weight would be not this kind of thing. I don't know what that would be classed as, I fear the front of the car would be to light and dangerous.
stef123
I can't help but look at it thinking.. its not just 'nose weight'. consider how far that bike sticks out from the towball - the old Force x Distance, you have considerably more force the further you are from that fulcrum point of the towball itself, basically saying the 140kg weight of the bike is more the further out it is from the towball.(something that annoys me with ignorant forklift drivers )
SeanW
As Stef said - nose weight (not even accounting for the extension forces) would prevent you doing that safely. Is a small bike trailer not an option? They come up on eBay quite often fairly cheaply
