Retrofitting A Sat Nav To A 2014/2015 (Facelift) Focus

Great thread.

I picked up my first Ford in 15 years yesterday, and had I known about this thread, I perhaps wouldn't have spent so long hunting down a Focus with Nav already installed.  Oh well.  Not the end of the world, as rather than ending up with a Zetec, I ended up , instead, with a Titanium X with a lot of toys.  Loving the adaptive headlights.

I would like to enable the nav directions in the cluster though, so that is something I would definitely like to do.  The reason I bought this Focus was after getting one as a hire car (a Zetec Special Edition thing, that came with cruise and nav, but was Sync 3.  Which I am considering upgrading to down the line as I liked it so much more).  But it had the nav in the cluster, which I found useful during my 500 mile drive home with it.  Would doing this mod affect my "lane guidance" or whatever system seems to appear in that area?  I don't necessarily want to lose that function completely, but when I have Nav on, it would be nice to see the next step in my cluster.  Is it an option you can enable "on-the-fly" so to speak?  Through the menus in the cluster.  Or is it just on once it's enabled, and that's that?

I am used to using VCDS with the VAG motors I have been driving for the past 12 years or so, so I don't mind a bit of "coding" here and there.  So I am about to pull the trigger on a cable for the Focus.  Will be interesting to see what can be done with it.

Also, before I found out about how cheap F7 maps were, I had already sourced and downloaded a copy of the map.  Along with buying a microSD for the maps.  However, I cannot seem to find the keygen for the card.  So I cannot seem to make my own card.  Can someone please message / send a link to where I can grab it, so I can at least attempt to make up my own F7 card.  I would like to learn this, as it means I can re-use the card when F8 comes out.  A torrent link would be preferred, or at least some somewhere where I don't have to sign up for a "free trial - just enter your credit card details here", so somewhere like Mega.

Thanks.  xs2man

@xs2man Hi Donald,

well in regards to your question with the cluster option, i unfortunately cannot give you an answer of what would happen. As i don't have the lane keeping option in my car so i always have there the additional navigation. But as your sat nav is from factory i guess you should have it there. So try to check your settings.

Anyway the change is reversible so you can try to activate the nav cluster option and test it your self. And if it would not work as expected you will just change the option to the one that was there before.

😉

Great.  I'll order up the cable, download the software, and give it a go.  What's the worst that could happen after-all?

Well, obviously I immediately run into a problem.  The SD card is exactly that.  An SD card.  So wont fit in my phone, and don't have an Android device that would take a full size SD card.

Would the Sd.Card.key from my F5 maps work with the F7 maps?  Or is there a windows 10 app I can use to extract the serial number?

Unfortunaltely only under OS Linux. 😞 That is why it is easy under Android phones. The sdcard key from your F5 map would work but you have to somehow baypass the write protection if you would like to overwrite the F5 map files with the one from F7.

So I have another SD card, would it work just using that?  Only one way to find out I guess.

EDIT:

Quick update.  So I tried it initially in exFAT formatting.  Wasn't recognised.  So formatted to FAT32, and one of the files was too big for the file system.  D'oh...

So, it turns out I am a bit of an idiot, lol.

For some reason known only to the numbskulls in my head, I thought I needed the serial number off the F5 card rather than off the microSD I was going to be using.  So after several attempts of being a tube, I finally popped the new microSD in my phone and extracted the serial number.  I then formatted to exFAT as there was that file that was going to be too big.

So after that, popped all the files back on, with the first .key file generated from the microSD serial, tested in the car, and voila, F7 maps.

£11 off amazon for the microSD was a fair bit cheaper than the £200+ from Ford.  Even almost 50% cheaper than the already cheap cards off eBay.  And all I'll need to upgrade now is to download F8 maps when they are released.

Thanks for the help.

Hi,

Could you be kind and guide me how to and from where I can download F7 maps and make my own sd card as you have done or successfully, I have F3 at the moment.

Thanks.

Sorry if I am being dumb.
The serial number of the micro SD card is what you are creating the licence file from so that is what must be used in the car.
You fit the micro SD into an adaptor to convert it up to a standard SD card size-

It's the only real way to do it as Android devices dont take full size SD cards unless you get something like this-

you cant use newer versions of Android to read the SD Cards  CID (location for serial number) I think they disabled it in android 8 or 9. This means you might need to delve in to the world of Linux to get the correct information from the card in order to make the correct key.... or just spend £20 on eBay and save yourself all manor of hassle 🙂

@zeeashraf yes, as our colleague said above. The nav SDcards on eBay are now so cheap that it is not worth to fight with the process.

@Bannko just purchased an ST-3 today and noticed it’s come without a sat nav module, I should have spotted before I drove off! Would really appreciate if you could PM me the instructions over. Thanks!

Sorry.  Only just seen this.  For some reason I wasn't notified of your reply / quote.

I have been looking for the guide I used originally, but cannot find it.  And it was now so long ago, I cannot remember the process.  Sorry.  I think there are guides available on sites such as gpspower or gps underground.

Probably too late now.

This is true.  To some extent.  They are cheap enough at around £20 a pop, and when I realised this after going through the process with the F7 maps, I was disappointed with myself to some extent (on the other hand, I like to get a bit geeky occasionally, and actually enjoyed trying to figure it all out).

But then, because I did fight through and get it sorted last time, all I needed to do this time was download the F8 maps and copy them over to the card (keeping the sdkey file) and that was it.  Updated to F8 with very little trouble.  And will do so again when F9 maps come out.

Hi @Bannko I was wondering if you would be able to send over details on how to activate sat nav on the sync 2 system please? Picked up my Ford last weekend having been told it had Sat Nav only to find it just has compass and longitude and latitude 🙄
