Storage Compartment Lid Broken - Ideas Please

Featured Replies

The latch is broken on my lid but unexpectedly it stays down so I'm looking for ideas to be able to open it without having some great knob stuck to it.

Something nice and discreet

Any ideas?

Dare i say it . . . get a smaller knob . . . :P

there was a replacement latch available for a few quid - i found a thread on another focus but i cant find it right now...i'll keep on searching.

found it, the guy had used one of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-catch-latch-compatible-Brabantia-1-free-replacement-striker-pin-touch-bin-lid-/201357282926?hash=item2ee1d44e6e:g:axIAAOSwKrhVY2O1

from the thread on the other forum: al credit to Rob18

I then removed the catch from my car, prised the old catch out from the housing (pulls straight out with a screwdriver:

The best bit is the new bit off ebay fits directly into the housing:

Then it's simply a case of pushing it into place & glueing the new latch to the lid of the box smile.png

My lid stays closed so I have to open with a flat screwdriver or summink, I was thinking of just sticking summink dicreetly to the lid to pull it open when needed

maybe a little loop so that you can pull it open?

similar to this: http://thedreamstress.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/IMG_3467-500x375.jpg

make a loop and use araldite or similr to stick it to the lid so you can use that to lift it open

Is this the thread you were looking for Sal?

http://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/topic/40563-dashboard-compartment/page-2

This happened to mine. I couldn't get it open.

When I levered up up the lid with a Bojo, the whole latching assembly came out of it's socket

For want of a better description, the knobbly bit on the peg had broken off within the latching assembly, jamming the compartment shut.

Like Sal suggested I've replaced mine with a Brabantia bin catch assembly

there is another thread some where .ive had to do mine i used a press fitting with a magnet stuck to the underside of the lid .so you press to open .

you want something like these on ebay mod and glue in place of the originall

Compartiment lid latch breaks often on Focus Mk2 Ghia, there are few threads here, like https://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/topic/40563-dashboard-compartment/ and https://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/topic/16650-how-do-i-remove-dash-top-storage-compartment/

Also here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=C70uCTMAElg

I also had that problem.

But now I have another one: dash top cover (of which compartment is a part) is broken at driver's side.
Just like that, probably from the sun heat.
