Auto 59 Plate Fiesta Exclamation Mark Cog Warning Light

I have only had my car about 3 months and all of a sudden today i drove home from work and went to the supermarket, when i got back into the car and started i noticed it had no power to move forward.

I turned everything off and tried again, this is when i noticed this light on the dash. When i move it from park to reverse or drive the entire car shudders. On the dash where it shows the gear (R ) (D) (N) it is now just showing (--)

Has anyone got any ideas of what could be the issue?

Thanx in advance.

That particular warning is due to a Powertrain Malfunction fault.

Unfortunately with this fault the only solution is to have the car booked in for a diagnostic test to retrive the fault code(s) generated to cause the warning.

You will need to make sure the garage you select has the proper diagnostic equipment to do so (Ford dealers best but not cheapest).

It could be a problem with the throttle body, MAF or even the throttle pedal sensor.

Only way to be 100% is getting it scanned.

Thanx for your reply.

I just hope its not an expensive fix as I've only had the car 3 months. Im hoping its covered by the cars warranty but me knowing absolutely nothing about cars ill probably get the run around.

Ill get it booked in tomorrow to get scanned.

Under warranty you should be ok.

Was it from a Ford dealer or independent?

Independent dealers may not have the diagnostic set-up to read any codes correctly as they are probably stored on the transmission module rather than the main ECU.

Its from an independent dealer, i didnt ask about any warranty when i got the car. Im hoping its got one, it should have.

Ill find out tomorrow, ill post the verdict on here as soon as i know.

UPDATE..

I have left my car at a local garage while they investigate the issue. I also called the dealer where i got my car and they are telling me that i will have to have the car recovered to their 'approved' garage which is in Bolton while they look at it and tell me what my garage find, and that the cost of recovery is at my expense and they could have the car for unto a month.

Ive told them that that is simply not acceptable. Im now waiting for the garage to phone me and tell me the bad news.

I don't see why the dealer can't just pay my local garage to fix the problems, does anyone have any further advice?

Anyway....

Had my car in the garage and its the Solenoids that are the issue, this can be fixed in a day and will cost about £300 but the dealer where i got my car are insisting i take my car to Bolton and they told me they have to take out the auto gearbox and ship it to a specialist and this could take 3-4 weeks.

How can my local garage fix it in a day and the dealer's garage insist its a 3-4 week job?

I just need to find these solenoids now and see if i can get them at a good price.

Right.....

I got in contact with my finance company and complained and it turns out that i can in fact take my car to ford and get them to fix it as long as they fax the quote to the dealership.

Ive got it booked in for next Monday so i hope this is the last of the issue.

UPDATE!

Had the car scanned by Ford £72 for an hour and they couldn't really tell me what was wrong with it as they needed to investigate it further so i taken it to the warranty garage instead.  They had it for a week and they told me they replaced some wires on the wireing loom and updated the car software.

The only issue now is the digital petrol gauge that tells me how many miles to the next full up goes up and not down so i will have to actually look at the fuel needle on the dash.

Other than that, its fixed!!!

Well i got the same problem yet again. No power when starting off and the car shudders when i change from N-D-R.

I contacted the garage to ask what they did and i got told that they only done a software update. So i have taken my car to be fixed under warranty they lie now its not under warranty and i have the same issue and they won't touch the car.

I have made a complaint to my finance again but not expecting anything to come of it.

Id appreciate some advice if anyone can offer some.

Are you still getting the light on the dash or the --- message?

Clive (Stoney871) is right when he says you need the codes, but if it is the transmission, a standard generic scanner is no good. The Ford dealer did not find much, either they did not do their job, or quite possibly the fault had gone away. The only way to avoid repeated wasted diagnostics charges is to do it yourself. It is safe, and it is not hard.

You need a system like Forscan, which is a powerful Ford specific system. Cost £15.00 for the interface. Needs a computer of some sort. (COM port, USB, bluetooth or WiFi interfaces available).

You will find a lot about ELM327 & Forscan on this site, which together provide a very comprehensive diagnosis & maintenance tool. Post here if you want more info.

Note: Simply reading the codes can do no harm, and does not change anything. Just do not reset the codes (and you would have to ask the scanner to do this) if you are going to take the car to a garage.

James (jeebowhite) has done a nice guide: http://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/applications/core/interface/file/attachment.php?id=21196

For an ELM327 adapter, see
http://www.spanglefish.com/TunnelratElectronics/index.asp?pageid=516992

you will also need a program called Forscan, its free and you can get it from

http://forscan.org/download.html

If you get some error info, then someone here is much more likely to be able to help you.

Peter.

Who is your finance with? I only ask because my wife works for Black Horse dealing with faults on cars they've provided finance for so she will have advice for you if you'd like me to ask her?  Even if it's not Black Horse all finance companies have to abide to the same rules (CCA 2015).

Id rather not post the name of my finance just yet. They have emailed me back saying i need to provide a full diagnostic sheet with all faults and the cost to get it all fixed before they consider my case for anything. The car is booked in for tomorrow to see what the mechanic can do.
