Preecematt
Evening everyone! Looking at getting some LED's to replace the lights as they blow in the house. Got 3 out at the moment, 1 is the bogo standard round one(that screw in) and 2 are the 2 prong twisty one's, that look like halogens. Rest of the house is a mix of these as well, can anyone recommend where to buy LED's from and what output etc, forgot to mention 2 rooms are dimmers. Thanks in advance Matt
MONDEO TXS 2.2
Screwfix can be a good source
GMX
I got my ES ones for the security lights outside from Screwfix, the originals were GLS 60W, the LED replacements are 8.7W and 806 lumens, I got the cool white colour (4000°k). I'm only just starting to change over, I tend to bulk buy things like lighting. So far, it's only the security lights I changed, far too many spare CFLs too use up for the other lights at present. There are dimmer and non-dimmer LEDs James (jeebowhite) is completely LED I think, so he'll know more
GMX
2 prong twisty onesthat look like halogens; I'm guessing they're GU10 http://www.screwfix.com/c/electrical-lighting/light-bulbs/cat8350001?capfitting=gu10&cm_sp=level3-_-Lighting-_-icongu10 Edison screw ones, you don't say whether they're regular ES or smaller SES http://www.screwfix.com/c/electrical-lighting/light-bulbs/cat8350001?capfitting=es|ses&cm_sp=level3-_-Lighting-_-es
Turvey
Interested to know what LED GLS bulbs are recommended. We've got(new build-new building regs etc) GLS bulbs that take about 10 minutes to warm up and even then they don't seem to have the same light as 'proper' bulbs! GMX
Interested to know what LED GLS bulbs are recommended. We've got(new build-new building regs etc) GLS bulbs that take about 10 minutes to warm up and even then they don't seem to have the same light as 'proper' bulbs! My house was a new build under the 16th edition, with only some of the lighting with slow to warm up CFL's, and poor lumens when they've got there :( They were replaced quite quickly with near instant CFLs and some remaining traditional GLS, I still had. Would imagine yours was built to 17th edition, unless there's now an 18th edition. Well, the ones I got from Screwfix, light instantly, admittedly I've got 4000°K colour temperature (cool white) so it's appears whiter than the regular GLS 60W they replaced. Making a comparison as I swapped them over: it's like comparing regular headlights to xenons. I'm not a fan of warm white, so I'm not sure how they compare. In here, my office/study, at the moment I have a daylight (6000°K) effect 30W commercial CFL, which is both instant and bright these are the LEDs i've got in my security lamps: http://www.screwfix.com/p/lap-gls-led-lamps-cool-white-es-8-7w-pack-of-5/9600j
stef123
If your after GU10 LEDs, then look at the LAP range in screwfix. As an electrician I can thoroughly recommend them, many a house filled with them. I particularly favour the 4w/35w equivalent as the light output is really nice and it's warm white not dentist surgery white!

Preecematt
Ok thanks everyone, I'm a big fan of LEDs so I'll definitely be having a mooch on Screwfix. I'm the same as you GMX I'd rather buy in bulk/ahead, rather than as and when something breaks.
chrisuk45
I equipped our house from amazon and also Dunelms, which for a short time had some going for under £3. A mistake I think, as another branch they were £9. I think I noticed Asda selling them for about £5. I think they are great. I did get rid of two dimmer switches which the LEDs that I bought did not like. Also a real odd one this, on the landing, the light is controlled by a Timeguard switch, for when we are away. This switches the LED on OK, but when Off, the LED flashes? not flicker, no prob with normal bulbs or CFT (compact florescent) .
laumk7
We've got mostly LEDs in fact I think it's only the living room ceiling light (specialist bulbs) which doesn't, gotta say I prefer the instant light from a LED rather than the wait with a standard energy saver bulb. I think hubby bought them at screw fix or b&poo (same company)
jace1969
I changed all ours to LED,there the normal std fitting but had the 'cool white' which it a hell of a lot better. I had mine off eBay,the Bulb name is 'MiniSun' 6w which is like a 60w (6500k) .had a 10w like 90w and VERY bright. When people pop in they always comment how like daylight it is and better to see. I needed ones as close to day light as I could get and which didn't give a yellow effect for what I have to deal with.
chrisroberson99
I changed all of the GU10s in our house to Philips LEDs, not the cheapest but they are excellent. Good light output and none have broken yet (I put the first set in over a year ago.)
Preecematt
I'm uncertain as to which colour to get, I want the bright white one's, as I like the colour but I'm not sure if it'll be to much, can't work out if the prices are what I expected or cheaper

See i care for my dad and everything was a tint of yellow which didn't help things and also the yellow tint did (and was told) not help my dad with eye strain,it helped a lot with the white ones. I would just try one and see what you think as I did.

I like the idea of trying 1 of each, I think the whiter one's would go downstairs and the dimmer one's upstairs(well bedrooms anyway) Is cool white, a really bright white or a dim white? If you have the 60w which in my make Bulb is a 6w LED its a nice white but don't glare that much. I tired the LED with the yellow tint which was a bid better but i wanted no yellow at all. I did try the 10w but it was way to bright so that went in hall way where its very dark and does the trick.
chrisroberson99
Look for around 3000K. That's what the Philips ones are and they're not too white nor too yellow. A good balance IMO.

I don't know the current W of my lights lol. I'm the same, I don't want any yellow, I'll take a look at your recommendations and Chris's as well. I'd prefer bright downstairs and in the bathrooms and then dulls/dullers in the bedrooms Look for around 3000K. That's what the Philips ones are and they're not too white nor too yellow. A good balance IMO. Not quite as bright as a dentist room then??? Reason I'm trying to be particular is we have LED's in the kitchen at the in laws farm, and that kitchen is very dull and they are supposed to be white LED's. chrisroberson99
No they're good, brighter than halogens. Have a search on here for LED light threads and I posted a picture of them in one. :) EDIT: Here you go, page 2. http://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/topic/75833-led-lights-in-the-house/page-2?hl=+led%20+spotlights
Preecematt
Thanks for that, both of the pictures on that thread are what I'm looking for, by the way Chris I absolutely love the colour of your en suite
jace1969
Another thing is different makes are different light and i had this out with the person i had mine off. Mine are 6500k and you would think there white but put side by side with the 3000k there not. Its the Lumens on them as well as i found out so a mixture between 3 (watt/lumens/3000k.6500k) They all dont do the same on makes as i tried Asda,Tesco and these online just 1 bulb. Here is the link i had mine from and rang them up.http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MiniSun-LED-6W-10W-60W-100W-BC-B22-ES-E27-GLS-Lamp-Light-Bulbs-Warm-Cool-White-/371411437325?var=&hash=item5679d8c70d:m:mxrytBh9B4CO9Z8XpIevzsA

And thanks, it matches my room! (Everything I have is lime green) For reference, here are the ones in my bathroom. Philips 5W (50W) 3000K 36D White GU10 LED Spot Light bulbs (2 Pack) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00MB5XVJ4/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_nNjOwbPGJY3C8 They're a bit more expensive, but I've found the cheap Chinese ones to fail quickly. I've got these all over the house, and in Cyprus, and they're all fine!
Preecematt
Looked at both of the links, I don't get the pricing of the Phillips LEDs lol.
chrisroberson99
Why, do you think they're expensive? I guess you pay for the brand, but I stick to them as all our other bulbs (bar a few) are Philips and have lasted years. :)
