Black Trim Cleaner/Restorer

Hey guys, new to the forums here as picking up a 55 plate Focus Zetec Climate in Black tomorrow.

The guy is getting the car mopped today but I fully envisage having to tidy up the plastic trim pieces myself to satisfy my OCD!

I wanna know what products you've found useful to:

a) Restore the colour of black trim pieces.

And..

b) keep the trim pieces looking smart long term so I don't have to repeat a so often!

Cheers

Jon

First, pray the guy doesn't leave holograms all over your car, as most dealers do.

Second, purchase some all purpose cleaner (I recommend Inspired automotive Wide Stance)

Apply to all trim and agitate with a brush (don't brush your paintwork...)

Thoroughly wash the trim afterwards and get them absolutely bone dry. Now you have a choice.

Silicone products, or none silicone.

Silicone products are usually cheap & cheerful, but leave a sticky greasy finish.

Non silicone products use other chemicals for durability which makes them slightly more expensive.

Silicone; inspired automotive Show Shine.

Non silicone;

Inspired Automotive Devine Shine

OR. Use a natural wax such as Yorkshire detailing REVERSAL yo restore the trim & protect the paintwork!

You could look at Gtechniq C4 although some home users can struggle with application & its pretty expensive

Yeah I'm prepared to have to machine polish myself if need be, they guy they have at the garage has done a good job of the other black cars they have there, can tell they have been machines as they are like mirrors.

I dont one like the sound of the silicone based products, that's probably been my downfall before!

I like the sound of the wax route, especially if the Reversal wax has not white residue, I could just do the whole car with that stuff?

Protection is key on trim in my experience of not protecting like I should have

The silicone makes things more durable. Nothing wrong with it except it's greasy/sticky.

Reversal is 100% natural and has no nasty additives that cause staining. Its completely safe and extremely effective on trim!

What holograms dealers apply? I've never once had this please elaborate

Its caused by incorrect polishing technique. If a vehicle is badly polished, in certain lights there will be marks like these dea2d1a7bb6f68c66d3fa04afd75149d.jpg

Which require further attention from a professional like myself

Just now, GingerFlame said:

This is why I advise people not to try it themselves with £20 halfords polishers :)

Yeah, It's too easy to rush it. I saw some kid down the road doing his chaved up Chevrolet Lacette, Ruined the paint!

I always done mine myself, just taking it slow has always served me well

  • 3 weeks later...

For all black trims i would suggest Solution Finish which in my opinion is one of the few products that actually restores black trims.

One of the few? You cant have tried many products then... There are hundreds that restore the trim, from some pretty poor states I must say . Solution finish is just amongst the more durable

Solution finish is also rammed full of black dye, making it a complete messy nightmare to use!
