Focus 2009 Mk2.5 Jerking/Kangaroo

Hi All, I have a problem with my 2009 Mk2.5 focus (diesel 1.6) where my car jerks or kangaroo's when i lift off the accelerator at certain revs. When i am traveling in 2nd or 3rd gear around 1200rpms and lift off the pedal the car jerks back and forth. I do notice the problem when the engine is at full temperature, but this might not be a factor.

I have replaced the pedal (fly-by-wire) with a part from eBay but made little difference so wondered if anyone on here would know the cause of this?

hi andy

get the fault codes checked to see what errors are showing up.

if you have a smart phone then download the torque app and buy a bluetooth obd2 reader off eBay and this will read the codes for you, or you can buy a handheld reader which will do a similar job.

Thanks for replying. 

I did connect up an obd2 reader and no codes came up (not sure if there is anything specific about fords)

Just driven back home and no problems at all in traffic yet this morning I was getting the issue?!

mmm thats strange that no fault codes came up. 

you have a very wierd issue too..you might want to take it to a specialist or ford to have a look at it unless you trust your independent garage to work on it.

to get to the bottom of it could ned up costly as various parts will be changed before a fix is found...unless it has happened to someone else hence why ford might be an option.

see the reader, what kind is it? if you have a wired ELM327 device you should hook up your car to forscan on a computer, then go for a drive and record whats going on, ones to watch would be RPM, fuel pressure, MAP and MAF, DPF temp, DPF pressure and DPF distance until full. might be worth having some accelerator stuff too actual and commanded if there are those options, EGR actual and commanded.

 

Record it all then see whats what.  at the very least it might help you rule out some stuff which would be my concern with a garage, if its not obvious they might just start fishing randomly replacing stuff until they get lucky.

in fact isn't EGR mostly open at around 1500?

The issue seems to be more obvious when the car is at full temp that's for sure. 

 

Let me check the reader type.

Think this a general car issue rather than a focus problem, search car kangaroo and jerking,might help

Thanks James - looked around and some people are say map sensors and some engine mounts so not really sure what to focus on but might try and get the readings that Dee suggested.

So it turns out I have an elm reader and I have connected up using forscan. Going to take it out tomorrow and record some data :)

i have same issue with my 1.8 tdci mainly steady speed in 2nd and 3rd around 1800rpm to 2200rpm roughly. I used some fuel injector cleaner with a 20 pound fill uo and it eased off to barely minimal, kind of get impression might be dirty injector or one is naff. One thing a remember is without the egr blank its worse.

Thanks ajzetecs, I will go and get some injector cleaner (although I did use a flushing product a few months back) do you think there is chance it could be fuel? I use supermarket stuff mostly.

I only used supermarket fuel for 2 weeks, noticed more smoke and less MPG, it's just not cost effective and look at all the injector problems since they start selling fuel. If you changed fuel filter recently make sure inlet and return are on the right way round.

Never used supermarket fuel should be banned with crap they put in it, i used wynns injector cleaner, av got few suspictions on what might be, dirty injector/faulty, fuel filter or might need to give airfilter clean out

dont agree with the comment. i've used supermarket fuel for ages now without issues. all fuels come from the same place and the more expensive ones have better additives added. cheaper fuel is not poor quality as al fuels have to pass a certain quality standard fit for use.

As above, I've seen Shell, BP, Esso and even supermarket tankers all being filled up from the same pipes for delivery across the country, it's the additives that make one better than the other.

Hi guys, still no further toward finding the issue - not sure it's the fuel as this would be all over the Internet.

I can pretty much pin it down to 1250rpm lifting off (but not completely) in 2nd or 3rd gear and get a jump back and forth.

Saw this post about an earlier model but I'm pretty sure the part has remained the same so now thinking about a new pedal...

Just cause u see the tankers doesn't tell you whats in them, a guy who works delivering fuel told me different buttons for supermarkets at the refinery, sure its only the additives thats what I want to help keep things clean, tiny injectors and all.
