Hi All,

Not sure if anyone can help I have a 63 plate titanium X petrol, had two new front tyres fitted yesterday. Noticed that the steering wheel wasn't sitting straight but wheels were so took it to a specialist tracking place and they did some tests and realigned however, I still have the same problem. The steering wheel is sitting more over towards the right.

Also I have an issue with the fan cutting in, the other evening I drove 7 miles at about 21:30 so it was fairly cool yet my fan kicked in for a good 10 mins after the engine went off. This is happening frequently but ford keep telling me it's normal?????!!!

any help, advice or suggestions would be great

The fan kicking in is normal as the ECU monitors the engine temperature for a while after you switch the ignition off and kicks in if needed.

When you had the tracking done the chances are they have only done one side, they should have tracked (adjusted) both sides and ensured the threads showing on the driveshafts were even on both sides. (Basically you will now have more threads showing on one driveshaft than the other) because of that the wheel will not sit correctly. They should also have made sure the stearing wheel was correctly positioned and locked before they did the tracking.

Hi Russ

thank you for your response. They claimed they did do both sides they put some sensors on and put the readings on the screen there was one red reading and after adjustment all readings were green.

How much is the steering wheel off centre? If it is just a small bit it can be caused by the camber/curved surface of the road.

The camber of the road makes it necessary to counter steer a bit which makes the steering wheel stand a small bit off centre while driving in a straight line. This can be minimized by putting the steering wheel a small bit off centre (in te opposite  position) before the wheels are alligned.

Hi JW1982

thank you for your reply, when the wheels are straight the steering wheel is sitting about 6 inches out

That is way too much. Personally i would go back to the specialist who alligned the car  If the wheels are alligned to the correct specifications while the steering wheel is locked in the center position the steering wheel should not be that much off center. They must have done something wrong or there is a serious problem with the steering system.

If the problem arised after fitting the new tyres I would also check the tyres, tyre inflation and if the wheel nuts are tightened correctly.

I have had my tracking checked in the past, they used a Laser device but before they did any adjustments they clamped the steering wheel centrally. They fitted things to ALL four wheels, maybe they, someone forgot to clamp the steering wheel first, or they were not properly trained, apparently it is possible to adjust all four wheels !. I would defiantly take it back.

This!

Unless you've hit a pot hole or kerb, or replaced a suspension/steering component, there is no reason for the wheel to 'just' end up 6" out of line.

If it was only after the tracking was done then take it back and have them do it properly...chances are they won't be able to though, most places that offer tracking can't seem to do it in my experience!

Look under the car at your track rod ends, measure the visible threads on both driveshafts and check they are equal lengths.

Had a fiesta mk3 done at quick fit once, cause they didn't do both sides equally the stearing wheel was 30 degree off, they wanted to strip the stearing column down!!!!! No thanks, went to ford, had it done right & never gone to quick fit since!

top strut mount could be seized but doubtful.

Annoyingly the Ford steering wheels don't have much movement, they use a 6pt nut rather than a spline so it's not even like you pull the wheel off and turn it a bit.

Russ is right, although the computer shows the angles are all fine, they've moved one TRE more than the other, should've locked the wheel central first.

Both front wheels need to be tracked to the right to straighten the steering wheel up.
