Ford focus 1.6 tdci cluster clocks

Hi I have a mk2 focus 1.6 tdci 2005, all gauges work apart from the speedo, sometimes the speedo stays on zero while driving, sometimes it will work but you are not doing the speed displayed. When you turn the ignition off the speedo will will settle on around 17mph.

I guess it's not the speed sensor as the milage display works and adds miles while driving.

My question is am I better off buying a good set of used clocks and get them programmed to my car or send the original away for repair?

I have been quoted to fit and program used clocks for £50.

Thanks

Repair prices seem to be £80 to £100 for these units, plus postage there. But if the prices and ages are similar, I would go the repair route, a bit less risk, the repair should have some sort of warranty. A used cluster could have, or soon develop faults.

Focus clusters around this age are prone to bad soldering faults. My 2006 one had bad joints on the connector.

Unless the used cluster is a bit newer, then it may be more reliable.

If you are a dab hand with a soldering iron, a diy fix may be possible.

One point to note: The mileage counters on these units can not be adjusted downwards, only up.

Peter.
