Timbo
Hi all, I'm thinking about blocking off my EGR valve on my 2004 Mk3 Mondeo duratec. The throttle response has always been "wooly" and I'm hoping to improve it. There's lots of info on doing it on diesels, but hardly any on petrol engines. Has anyone done it, and what was the effect? Thanks! Tim
beethoven
Well, I think the effect is the same as with the diesel engines......

If a petrol engine is designed with EGR, then there is a small risk of more detonation (pinking or knocking). The lower O2 content with EGR can allow slightly higher compression ratio, and different ignition timing. The engine's knock sensors should compensate for this. Try it, but listen for increased pinking, and check the mpg. Non optimum timing could reduce mpg. Diesels rarely suffer detonation because of the non-homogeneous mix: The fuel spray burns as it is injected.
