New Project; Mk2 Focus ST3 Panther Black

Hello & welcome,

I've already made a project thread on here listing a Fiesta 1.0 Ecoboost for those of you wanting to see my previous work & modifications :)

However, that project has now come to an end. I've recently traded that Fiesta in for something with a little more kick. After going to Ford Fair 2016, seeing and hearing the mk2 Focus STs give it some on the track I knew that would be my next direction. It's a pretty drastic change going from a 1.0 litre 3 cyclinder Fiesta... to a 2.5 litre 5 cyclinder Focus! And I've loved every minute of ownership so far.

Personally I loved the Panther Black on the Fiesta and it was no different with the new project car, so I hunted for one. I wanted a PB Focus that was completely standard, giving me a good basis to work on modifications, and also to know it had been driven sensibley. The example I found, had 10 years worth of Ford service History and only 48k on the clock (for a 10 year old car thats pretty good going..). It was also an ST3 so comes with bi-xenon HID headlights, full recaro leather bucket type seats, upgraded sony sound system etc.

So with all that out the way, here are some photos of the car as it was, completely standard :)

2016-09-24 18.45.12.jpg          20160926_190217.jpg

The absolute first thing I wanted to do once I had acquired the car, was to give it a long overdue all day cleaning session in which I got the following done!

- Snowfoam Pre-Wash - Shampoo - Glaze - Polish - Wax - Quick Detailer, and the car came up a treat, so happy with it!

20160927_155037.jpg    20160927_173912.jpg

The first modification that I was to make, I had purchased before even getting the car as I found a good deal on one of the forum pages :D

This came in the form of two zunsport front grills, for the top and bottom - comes in gloss black which is so much smarter than that crappy matte grey/black Ford likes to do things..

Take a look for yourself

20160926_190127.jpg     20160926_203640.jpg

With the zunsports on (still need to spray the top original grill gloss black as zunsport goes over the top)...

20160927_155145.jpg    20160927_155125.jpg

Have done loads more bits and pieces, will upload those when I get some more free time! Thanks for looking, I'll update very very soon!

Great to see another PB focus st on the forum. Car is looking great makes me want to get mine wash and waxed.

I know exactly what you mean with going to Ford Fair. After hearing those cars fly round the track I had to go and get myself a turbo back exhaust.

Looking forward to see what else you have planned.

I have also considered selling up and going for a mk2 ST. Was it hard deciding to go for a car older than the one you had? This is the thing that's getting me :(

Ok, by some sort of miraculous luck, I managed to have a go in a MK2 ST today. Holy God, the speed is savage. Forget my last post. I'd sell anything to have an ST in my life 😑

I did think am I really going to trade in my newer 13' plate with 20k on it for a car 10 years old with double the mileage.. and for the same price as well? But honestly best decision I ever made in the car scene, 2.5x the engine size of the fiesta and now 5 cylinder instead of 3. The speed is one thing, but the beautiful sound of the 5 cyclinder roar is just something else... Wouldn't look back so far!!

Back onto modification updates!!

So got a bag full of light goodies to add on to smarten up the car a tad :)

Inside included new gel badge overlays (carbon background with white writing) - Front/Back/Steering Wheel/Wheel caps £30 from someone I really recommend on eBay if anyone is looking for some. Have used this seller (Calibrafastcat) multiple times, great communication and gets delivered 1-2 days.

IMG-20161001-WA0004.jpg

There is also a white ST badge for the front grill, but I am yet to put that on. There is also a gloss black adhesive strip for the front above the top grill ( I plan to wrap this in carbon as my theme for the car is going to be Black with white & carbon for the exterior, and lime green for lights and a few other details as can be seen further along).

Also got some white inlays for the original red ST badges on the car.. This helps getting the theme going alot, and looks much smarter if you ask me. Plus its more modified ;)

IMG-20161003-WA0008.jpeg  EXCUSE DIRTINESS

One of my pet hates with the prefacelift model of the MK2 Focus ST is the lousy fog light covers in a terrible grey with silver outline. So, I decided to tackle these by using matte black for the insert, and wrap the frame in carbon to get my theme going :)

20161001_222811.jpg     20161001_222831.jpg

Smartened up the rear alot!! Ran out of time with the fronts so still need to do them, but further through the project you'll see the rear looks much better!

Another improvement I made for the rear was to tint the rear lights using fly-eye as done before on the Fiesta. The lights on the Focus were MUCH easier to do, and completely nailed it! Again, you'll see pics lower down of how they look really.

20161001_172043.jpg

Now, one performance upgrade i've made is called the De-Res pipe exhaust mod. Which basically entales taking out the middle silencer on the exhaust system, and replacing it with a straight through pipe in the middle instead.

                             Original                                                   De-Res Pipe                                                           Fitted

20161001_155822.jpg      20161001_155814.jpg      20161001_165311.jpg

This has opened up some of that 5 cyclinder roar, gave it more crackles and now instead of having a minute pop/bang, it now bangs like a whip and is extremely loud when wanted :D It's so much fun, due to the unpredictability of when the next bang, pop or crackle is going to come. Nothing more satisfying than giving it some beans and then it bangs moving into the next gear!! Best £30 I've ever spent haha, temporary measure gets replaced when getting a cat-back system fitted :)

Also installed some fantastic green LED panels lights into the footwells, need to get some better pics of those but here....Little blurred

20161003_185651.jpg

Next time I did any work it was at my friend's garage, the same friend that also had the fiesta has now also gone for a Mk2 Focus ST! In performance blue!

20161008_080012.jpg

This job we've done before in my other project, and we both wanted the same thing! We really liked the standard 18' alloy wheels on the ST so we decided to paint them gloss black! Took a while but really prepared them this time, thorough clean, sand with abrasive sandpaper to scratch and then used a less coarse sandpaper to smooth it out. Then primered the wheels, sanded back smooth a smidge and was good to go! Some of my wheels had small kerbing and crack so sorted them out like a new refurb :) While in the middle of wheels, we also painted our brake callipers with Etech painting kits (Brush). I went for lime green to bring out the black, and my friend went orange with his!

20161008_170946.jpg20161008_172519.jpg20161008_172512.jpg

They all came out really good and was happy with the results!! Black wheels gave the car that stealth look I love, and the green just grabs attention!

20161009_080739.jpg

Need to sort out the front fog covers tho be getting done asap!

20161009_080753.jpg

With this being said, I went out one morning and took some photos in 2 quite good locations so I'll spam you with some pictures of how she's lookin' at the moment!

I'll have to upload the next pictures when I get back, as Im travelling 4.5 hours tomorrow to go to the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales with the Mrs! I'll be back Saturday or Sunday.

Let me know what you think of the changes, thanks for showing an interest guys!

  • 2 weeks later...

Hello again people,

Thanks for the replies!

Back from my week away in the Lake District.. struggled with the GF's 1.4 corsa SRI all week wow.. aha :)

Anyway got some photos to upload first that I took, and then I also have made some more changes and got lots more to come!

20161010_073146.jpg    20161010_073157.jpg

20161010_073445.jpg    20161010_074059.jpg

20161010_073457.jpg      20161013_161109.jpg

20161010_073703 (2).jpg

And a move of location..

20161013_161029.jpg    20161013_161216.jpg

20161013_161147.jpg    2016-10-13 16.50.01.jpg

Pretty happy with the shots from my phone, need to invest in a good phone like a DSLR really for better shots!

Anyway can document one more modification i've made, and that was installing a mongoose sports cat to the car! It was used but at a bargain price of £135 for a few months use you cant really complain when they are £500 new!

Old restrictive catalyic converter (big old chunky restrictive thing!)

20161024_101240.jpg

20161024_103253.jpg     IMG-20161024-WA0007.jpg

We had to angle grind some of the old existing bolts off on the original catalyic converter in order to fit the sports cat. Didn't manage to grab a pic of underneath with the sports cat on this time, was too excited to go hear it.. But next time on the ramp I will try to get a pic, its alot more roomy now with the centre silencer gone and the normal cat replaced with a smaller but 3 inch mongoose sports cat!

The sound difference is incredible, it now growls like an absolute beast.. and the bangs are frightening!  Head turner inc :)

As I say loads more on the way, parts are here just need to find time to get them on and modify bits and pieces!

Thanks again !

Back some more with a few different extras!

First I decided to do another performance mod which was an upgraded intake induction kit. Found a really cheap K&N gen 2 induction kit, was only £40 so thought very worth while! It is an open cone filter system, which is less restrictive than the huge original black factory box. Because of this, you can now hear the air being sucked in and the turbo spooling a bit better!

20161029_140209.jpg      20161029_143115.jpg

The cone sits next to the passenger side foglight grabbing in the cold air from nearer the floor, whilst back in the engine bay the old huge stock panel filter is removed and the K&N top is added which mounts the ECU onto it! Here is an image of it fitted inside to demonstrate! The engine bay so far is quite boring and stock but dont worry I do have some things to spruce it up and add more colour soon!

20161029_145135.jpg     20161029_150834.jpg

Okay so the next mod I did was to let everyone know that my car was an ST when they see it hunting them in their rear view mirror. Going with the theme of the car and the badges, I got an ST grill badge in white :) looks smart and livens it up! Think it looks best at the bottom right of the zunsport grill next to the zunsport badge..

20161029_114906.jpg    20161029_114911.jpg

When the car is clean! Still need to find time to do the fog light covers!!!!!

20161031_150231 (2).jpg    20161031_150334.jpg

One more small little modification, is something I always prefer. The smaller aerials for the roof of cars. Can't stand the long factory ones. Went for a carbon fibre look one, very cheap and fitted straight on so decent.

20161031_150128 (2).jpg   20161031_150201.jpg

Another modification I needed to do was make the car feel a bit more updated and not stuck in the 2000s. One of the things I disliked most from the car standard was the head unit in the middle of the car, although it was the upgraded ST3 Sony Audio Unit it still looked dated and needed to be refreshed.

I spent a bit of money on this but I got the Pioneer 3500BT DAB head unit, which also came with DAB radio and reverse parking cameras that comes on when put in reverse! The sound quality is much better, and will be improved once again when I can find a subwoofer unit box in time! Oh how i've missed bluetooth and my own songs..

You can choose all the theming of the unit, the colour of the background, the colour of the buttons, the display picture, and there are interactive flowing backgrounds like the one im currently using and taken in the photo. Put it all green at the moment to go with the green theme and LEDs in the footwell!!

20161029_221230 (2).jpg   20161029_221118.jpg

Thanks for having a look, let me know what u think!

Thanks mate, work in progress but getting there! Yeah was quite standard when you popped over :) Haha yes indeed it does, but more of that to come and I'm sure we'll catch up eventually so you can deafen your ears..! There's no other way of doing the black cars :) Has to be blacked out & some subtle tinges of colour contrast if you ask me!

Couple of extra things i've done just during the week, have saturday off for some more modifications to go on hopefully :)

So some thing I tackled briefly this morning was giving the engine bay a bit of colour as it looked very bland and boring even with the K&N induction, although not finished I did manage to get some vibrancy going on!

20161103_100710.jpg    20161103_102705.jpg

20161103_102713.jpg

Came out pretty good, just used a lime green paint pen patiently and started to work well! Decided that after seeing it go well for the induction kit, I'd also do the same for the letters on the engine cover block. As I say, not finished yet, want to do the ST and ford badge in white.

20161103_103304.jpg    20161103_105451.jpg

20161103_105515.jpg

Ive got something else to go on to add to the colour of the engine bay, when I get time I'll do that too and update!

Also got some new LED Unit replacements for the rear number plate lights. As usual went to my trusted seller, Richard Patch at PW performance and he sorted me out. Great quality and reliability im sure as usual.

20161031_182314.jpg    20161031_182141.jpg

Need a proper camera :( phone can't deal with it!

20161031_183603.jpg    20161031_183649.jpg

I'll update hopefully over the weekend when I get some more bits done!

The paint pen is a Pentel Paint Marker (medium tip) and worked great to be honest, I've used others before and not had any issues using them! Only cost about £3 as well :) Good for bringing out some colour in things!

Did a few more bits over the weekend so will show you guys, need to clean the car and then go and take some proper photos! Took these just outside the house a minute ago ha

Wanted to finish off the front fog light covers to match the rear, black centre with dark carbon wrapped trim around the edge! Looks so much better than the crappy grey and silver Ford released them with.. Stealth!

20161107_102013.jpg

Fly-eye tinted the front headlights - wanted to reduce the amount of stock chrome on the car and give it a more stealth look.

20161105_164323.jpg     20161107_102031.jpg

For another reasonabley cheap modification had to be the Wind Deflectors on the windows :)

20161107_102108.jpg   20161107_102058.jpg

Still got lots of parts to get on, hoping I can do them soon as just purchased some more bits to do :yahoo:

Hello people!

No modifications in this post, did however go and do a little photo shoot in a couple of places local to me (same areas I used for the Fiesta I previously had). Only used my standard Samsung phone, so really need to go and purchase a DSLR or something similar, but none the less..

Shame as the quality drops when uploading on here, in fact anywhere on the internet! Still came out pretty good for a phone! Did this just to show off some of the modifcations and the look that the car has currently. Obviously there is still more stuff to come, just need to get round to fitting them!

Let me know what you think!

Matt

Haha I don't mind everyone has their opinion :) I like the fact it takes all that stock chrome away and makes it look meaner, the holes allow for the light to pass through so I still keep practical visibility. I've tried tint film and yes I prefer the solidarity of it, I don't like the shade it made the headlight and obviously its worse for practicality! Tough one but for now I prefer the fly eye for sure, ultimate aim is to just get the headlights with the black trim inside!

Hey all so made a couple of changes on Thursday..

First mod was some green tint film to go over the foglights.. makes the car look more mean and fits in with my theme! Suits the green LED interior I have as well, will use mainly at shows etc :) excuse the dirtiness, we washed our cars after!

20161117_102200.jpg   20161117_102127.jpg

One thing about these photos is I definitely realised I need to get some proper sidelights, hate the standard colour - might look into getting colour changing ones to match the green fogs!

20161117_102547.jpg

The next change I made was moving the original numberplate off the car, I purchased a stick on plate as I didnt want a numberplate blocking the airflow at the front!

20161117_104130.jpg   20161117_105348.jpg

Need an airtec intercooler now that its opened up, but I think it looks better! Not really a massive fan of the stick on plates on the side so have put it in the centre between grills!

My friend also applied orange tint film to go with his theme of blue and orange

20161117_133933.jpg   20161117_133948.jpg

20161117_151640.jpg   20161117_162422.jpg

20161117_151716.jpg   20161117_152052.jpg

20161117_151605.jpg

Appreciate might not be to everyone's tastes, but I do think it will be a nice touch at shows :) Also what do people think of the number plate position?

Can you 'hang' the plate off the lip under the bottom grill ? It may catch speed bumps right enough. The car looks awesome nonetheless.

You probably could if you didn't mind drilling holes into the bumper which im not a massive advocate of, and yeah it would catch on so many things I don't think it would remain there for very long! Thanks bud, fresh project but plenty more to come and do!
