Jonanstee
Any ideas how I can increase acceleration on my 1.6 petrol mk2 without spending a bomb?
Stoney871
Heavier shoes? [emoji41]Seriously though, a remap or a tuning box would work the best but a decent high flow air filter and better exhaust would help the engine breathe clearer.Sent from my SM-G930F

Sent from my SM-G930F I've always been told a remap isn't worth it on a petrol? What air filter would you recommend?

Very true, for a N/A petrol you'd only be looking at 9bhp maximum as average increase for a Bluefin tune.Pipercross, Green Cotton or K&N filters will give improved airflow allowing a bit more acceleration (probably just as much gain as a £300 Bluefin tune would).Coupled with a high flow exhaust (sport cat or similar) would probably be another 10 bhp increase.A N/A 1.6 petrol is never going to be a race winner but a bit of sensible tinkering will make it a bit more perky.Sent from my SM-G930F

Stoney871
£40 ish for a filter and a fair bit more for an exhaust (probably £400 ish for a decent stainless set plus fitting).Sent from my SM-G930F

You could always swap it for a 2ltr lump. Instantly more power than you will get trying to tune yours and probably similar costs too if you can get the engine and ecu from a breakers and fit it yourself. There is no cheap power increase for your engine. Really you would need throttle bodies, head work and cams etc or a turbo/supercharger conversion. Its really not worth the hassle and then there are the insurance implications. I would save your money and then sell it and buy a quicker car as standard when funds allow. Incontro
Yeah the 1.6 lump is never going to break any speed records - though at least it sounds nice under load though (compared to similar sized petrol engines), and is pretty reliable. If you want more power, trade it in for a 2.0 version, or another car with more power. Not worth the effort/expense to modify a 1.6 N/A as minimal gains to be had as other posters have pointed out.
