2006 1.8 TDCi belt/chain replace

2006 1.8TDCi with 62000 do I replace them at half way through recommended mileage because the car is 10 years old, dont want to spend any money unless I have to its just a cheap run around, what figure am i looking at £250

I would say definitely yes to the belt change. Rubber & fabric degrades with age as much as with use.

It is debatable whether the lower timing chain is a routine replacement. Earlier service schedules did not specify it. But it will not age in its oil environment, so I would leave it. If the tensioner wears a bit, it will get noisy before it breaks.

My 1.8 has done a few more miles than yours, it is on 157k now, and showing a few signs of age.

The belt was done 5 years (& 30k miles) ago, as far as I know the chain is original.

I had my MK2 saloon 1.8 TDCI Terracleaned a couple of years ago at approx 100K miles and it made the world of difference.  Much livelier pick up at low revs, no more soot storm out of the exhaust when booting it and a much happier runner on cold mornings (previously the engine was a bit sluggish until warmed up).
