Reverse Gear

When engaging in reverse gear sometimes it doesnt engage fully and just wirrs, if this happens i put it back to neutral and push it back in sometimes i hear clunk and it engages. all other gears are fine

 

could this be a sign of more problems in the gearbox or could it just be some bracket has come loose.

 

should i renew the gearbox oil? the guy at Halfords said its guarenteed for lifetime. is this true or was he pulling a fast one?

 mine does same thing I think they all do it on the mk 2.5

There's no synchromesh on reverse gear so you have to ensure your fully stopped, give it a second then slip it into reverse and it should go in ok.

Sounds just like what my Focus and old Escort does,
Sometimes it doesn't want to sit in reverse first time, I just release & dip clutch and try again, usually works.

Yep that's exactly what's happening, you need to give it a second or two after putting the clutch in then slip it into reverse and it should go in ok.

I get it on mine though I shift it into a different gear like first, and then try again with reverse 80% of the time it shifts into reverse.

I did do a partial oil gear change last year, and spraying a little wd 40 after removing gear panel always helps.

How long have you had the car? Is it a recent phenomenon? What mileage has it done? Do you know when the clutch was last replaced? The gear oil is likely to be what is called 'filled for life' which isn't the same as 'guaranteed' for life. If it's a high-mileage car it may well benefit from a gear-oil change, or it may not...

It's just a characteristic of the IB5 box Ford use on multiple models.

You get a feel for when it won't go in, sometimes lifting the clutch briefly in neutral can help line things up better if it's not having it, even when completely stationary.

I think most Fords I've ever had do it. Standard IB5 Box 'feature'.

My dad said his Sierras were bad for it back in the day too.

same here I take no notice anymore as you don't use reverse that much

I drive everywhere in reverse!

Same issue with my MTX75 box. I'm used to it now, took a wee while but its not a big deal any more

I'm also having this problem of reverse poping out. And I've tried to fix it three time it doesn't even last a month. What the mechanic told me is that the gear it self break easily so there no way you can avoid it. So it's the fault from factory manufacturered it. So ford new about this and sold these cars to people. I wanted to trade-in mine but i decided to not cause the dealership will sell to someone else and experience same problem. Just waiting to scrap it afterwards
