ecoboost died again

Hi.

I feel utterly stuffed with no hope so grateful for any wise words or simple support that I am indeed stuffed!

Here's the score. I have a 2013 1.0 ecoboost. Ex-demonstrator bought direct from Vospers in 2014. In nov 15 an engine overheat caused the engine to die horribly. it was replaced under warranty by Ford.

Last friday an overheat happened again. 5mins into a journey. stopped on park spot directly off rush hour duel carriageway. waited to cool. drove 1 mile to get off duel. very slow drive. no repeat warning light. parked open bonnet. no visible coolant. waited 10 mins. topped up. made hisses spewed fluid on floor. wouldnt then start. 

Preliminary inspection today suggests engine casing has warped and engine needs replacing. New car warranty expired. No warranty for this 18 mth old engine. Which is hard to fathom but sadly true.

I have lodged a complaint. rubbish ford assistance, service advice and engine. Car serviced in Feb was told coolant bottle cracked and to 'keep an eye on' . I have was told to change in next 6 mths. hadnt done as local vospers closed and nearest now 40 miles.

Dealer now advised inspection found no coolant leaks. I detected a smirk down line as he saw his escape route.  if no leak why overheat and what lost the coolant! Surely not normal to lose all coolant in the 4mths since service?!

CRC being spoken to tomorrow. vospers said new engine abt £5k...... f sake.....Car has 40k on it. So is close to me scrapping it if Ford dont pay (and strongly suspect they wont). A 2013 car scrappable after one over heat light on 2nd engine! gob smacked and kickingmyself for buying such experimental guff. cant say I ever got close to the claimed mpg.

any views ....am I right to be utterly despondant!?  back to built like a briick privvy 2.0 diesels for me I think.

After the first signs of overheating you should not have driven the car anymore. You should have had the car towed instead. At that point the engine may not have had any internal damage yet. By driving the car for another Mile without any/enough coolant the engine will certainly develop internal engine damage. Next to this the engine temperature warning light will never be activated if there is no (or not enough) coolant in the system. The temperature sensor measures the coolant temperature. If there is no (or not enough) coolant inside the system the sensor only measures air. Air does not transmit the temperature very well. This causes the engine to seriously overheating without activating the temperature warning light.

If the coolant reservoir developed cracks it should have been replaced right away. It does not make any sense not to replace it. The coolant reservoir is an inexpensive part and changing the reservoir prevents a lot of trouble.

Did you never check the coolant level? You should check all fluid levels at least once a Month. It is the drivers responsibility to keep the fluids at the correct level.

 

When Ford replaced the engine the first time the new engine is basically a spare part. The Ford parts warranty is applicable on this engine. As far as I know rhe parts warranty for a service/replacement engine is 12 months unless the warranty of the car is a longer period.

all fair points and weell made. Driving that short spell to be in a safe location was one risk vs another. in truth your explain of warning light or lack of is a sad revelation of my lack of engine knowledge.

I had checked the level but was ultimately annoyed to be told of crack in passing on way out so to speak. why not call midservice to share and recommend change. but with their inspection showing no leakage that line of attack dies as a cause.  acracked bottle documented as 'advisory' seems a tad lame for what could be catostophic.

that said they cant surely have it both ways. if the system is sealed and sound then the coolant shouldnt vanish after 4 mths. surely. for me thats probs around only <2500 miles or so driving total.

perhaps its fate that upon checking my facebook 1st advert I saw and not seen previously was a £2000 scrappage offer from vauxhall. wonder if they take dead focus!

im not going to say the rights and wrongs etc. but as a fix get a 2nd hand engine off eBay and get an independant to fit it for you. got to be cheaper than scrap value.

a sound move if you know what you doing wrt engines and get along with eBay. as I meet neither criteria i'd rather drag my balls across scotch bonnet soaked broken glass 

dum question. basic 1.0 focus hatch ecoboost style 2013 ~ 40k on clock. assume working engine. am guessing £6k trade and £7k private. way off?

heard back today. Mr Ford is going to cover 100% of the cost of the new engine. despite no warranty on this 18 mth engine. quite a (welcome) shock.

faith restored that there is some good in the world.

naff saying but tis true ' if you dont ask...'.

I wrote to them when the gearbox went in my D reg 1.3 Escort! (going back a few years) it had just over 50K on the clock and was 2 years old.

They paid for the parts and 50% of the labour, A drop in the ocean for Ford and today I am driving a Focus.

Wow that's a turn up!  My dealer won't even supply me with a £15 sensor wire cover which was missing when I bought the car! Good news for you mate!
