Ford Focus sloppy Gear selection

Hi

Hoping someone can help me on this one.

2014 Ford Focus 1.6 tdi 6 speed gearbox 63,000 miles on the clock.

Gear selection has suddenly become sloppy. When selecting 1st gear it's easy to select reverse gear instead. Also it's difficult to select 2nd gear because the gear stick moves too far to the left.

Any help would be much appreciated

Hopefully it is just the selector levers and links. At the gearbox end, they should be visible if the air filter is removed. A connection could be loose or misplaced, or a pin or bolt out of place. I had a similar problem on a Vauxhall once.

The gear stick end is a bit harder to get at, but the centre console should come out with a bit of effort, that might reveal a problem at that end.

Many thanks for your suggestions - I will investigate and let you know how I get on.

Update- problem now gone away. I think it was caused by the sprung loaded pull ring that you pull to select reverse gear. I think this got stuck but now is working OK.
