If I put silicone on the body pannel/ paintwork of my car will this damage the paintwork?

Hi

I bought a side vent to fit onto the sides of my Fiesta (purely asthetic) and was recommended to use silicon to stick the vent onto the outer bodywork/ paint of the car. Question 1 will this be strong enough? The plastic attachment is very light. And 2 will this damage the paintwork?

Should be ok but a more permanent option is Tigerseal.

I was told years ago not to use silicone based sealant due to it affecting the paintwork but not sure if this applies anymore with the newer paints they use on cars .

I have used silicone on cars and motorcycles and never had any adverse effects. Plus you can cut it off with dental floss.

I would use either body shop double-sided tape or as Clive suggests Tigerseal

I know 3M has a low profile double sided tape.

 What a coincidence I am just about to fit  (waiting for postie to deliver) the RS type side vent on my MK2 ST and I was going to use Tiger seal but I think once on with Tiger seal its on for ever and that's it.so I might try your way with silicone as you can get it off after if needed. Unless any one can suggest something good that can be taken off easy if needed

I use builders silicone,I think its all the same stuff. I have stuck umpteen number plates on cars and removed them again and they cause no damage. You can tape the object in place and see if it hangs right then put the silicone on and leave it overnight and its done.

I did the old style flip sunroof and i got more dam seal on the paint than where it should of gone,all squirted out but came

off perfect and didn't touch the paint at all.
